Schumacher Gets 5-Place Penalty for Barcelona Crash

If you watched the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix last weekend, chances are you saw a disappointing end to Michael Schumacher’s race when his MGP W03 collided with the back of Bruno Senna’s Williams. Now, the verdict is out, and the race stewards have given Schumi the unpleasant reward of a 5-place grid penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix in two weeks. This penalty was given once the stewards reviewed the footage of the collision on lap 12 of the race and deemed it was caused by the German seven-time F1 champion for Mercedes AMG Petronas. Despite some strong practices and a very solid qualifying session, Mercedes AMG Petronas could not capitalize on its momentum heading towards Sunday’s race as Nico Rosberg managed to salvage a seventh-place finish while Michael Schumacher had to retire in lap 13 in the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix. Williams’ Pastor Maldonado emerged victorious from pole position in a race that saw everyone bumped up one spot after erstwhile pole position holder Lewis Hamilton was penalized for having insufficient fuel after qualifying and the McLaren-Mercedes driver ended up starting at the last spot on the grid. After strong showings in the practice sessions at the Circuit de Catalunya, Mercedes AMG Petronas was able to follow through with good performances in qualifying as Nico Rosberg is set to start at P7 and Michael Schumacher at P9 once the Spanish Grand Prix starts Sunday. It’s been a long wait for the resumption of Formula One action, but this weekend will bring a lot of excitement when the European leg of the 2012 season starts at Barcelona. Mercedes AMG Petronas delivered a strong showing in Friday practice, with both Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg building some momentum from the team’s testing at Mugello and then getting excellent results at the Circuit de Catalunya. Schumacher was great in Practice 1, notching sixth place at 1:25:187, while Rosberg was a mere 14th with 1:25:607. While there won’t be a Formula 1 race until May 13, Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg will join the brand’s entrants for the 2012 opener of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season as they demo a couple of Silver Arrow cars old and new. Rosberg, who scored the first pure Silver Arrow F1 win in over five decades when he won the Chinese Grand Prix two weekends ago, is demonstrating a Mercedes-Benz W196 car from 1955—the same model that Juan Manuel Fangio drove to victory at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix. Nico Rosberg finally felt how sweet it is to win a Formula One Grand Prix event at the Chinese Grand Prix last Sunday. It was historic for both the driver and Mercedes AMG Petronas GP, as the win marked the first victory in 57 years for an F1 car that rode purely under the banner of the Silver Arrow. Rosberg cruised to victory, ending up with a 20.6-second lead on the next guys, who happened to be driving Mercedes-powered cars. McLaren-Mercedes teammates Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton finished second and third respectively to join the German race winner on the podium.
