F1: Mercedes AMG Petronas Tests at Wet Mugello Track

With the European swing of the 2012 Formula 1 season set to begin in a couple of weeks, F1 teams began preparations with testing on the Mugello track. What greeted them was a morning that was mostly marred by wet conditions, the sort of thing that frustrates drivers and technicians alike. Mercedes AMG Petronas, however, took every positive bit they could out of the wet track. According to driver Nico Rosberg, who gave the Silver Arrow the victory in China, the team managed to get some very useful data out of the testing. He deemed it especially useful in that it should help address a weak point in the team’s… Continue Reading »

Schumacher, Rosberg Stage Silver Arrow Demos in 2012 DTM Opener

While there won’t be a Formula 1 race until May 13, Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg will join the brand’s entrants for the 2012 opener of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season as they demo a couple of Silver Arrow cars old and new. Rosberg, who scored the first pure Silver Arrow F1 win in over five decades when he won the Chinese Grand Prix two weekends ago, is demonstrating a Mercedes-Benz W196 car from 1955—the same model that Juan Manuel Fangio drove to victory at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix. Schumacher, meanwhile, will demo the MGP W02, which was used by the team in last year’s… Continue Reading »

Bahrain: Nico Rosberg starting out in position 5

With last week’s Chinese Grand Prix victory, Mercedes AMG Petronas was finally able to get a win—and it did so with a perfect race from driver Nico Rosberg, proving that the quality Mercedes car parts used in the W03 are reliable and that the car is ready to contend—something it plans to do in Bahrain. While Nico Rosberg was excellent in the practice sessions and managed to take P5 in qualifying, tire overheating might be a problem for the team during the race itself. Tire manufacturer Pirelli, who provides the rubber for Mercedes and the other teams on the grid, have downplayed these concerns. The manufacturer stated that all teams… Continue Reading »

Nico Rosberg finally felt how sweet it is to win a Formula One Grand Prix event at the Chinese Grand Prix last Sunday. It was historic for both the driver and Mercedes AMG Petronas GP, as the win marked the first victory in 57 years for an F1 car that rode purely under the banner of the Silver Arrow. Rosberg cruised to victory, ending up with a 20.6-second lead on the next guys, who happened to be driving Mercedes-powered cars. McLaren-Mercedes teammates Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton finished second and third respectively to join the German race winner on the podium. Incidentally, it was also Rosberg’s first time to start… Continue Reading »

Rumor: Michael Schumacher, Retiring?

As David Coulthard commented on Mika Hakkinen’s return to racing, “a true racer never loses the speed, only the need to race,” this may be a statement that Mercedes Petronas’ Michael Schumacher can also use. That is, if the rumors are true that he is retiring after the next season. In an interview with Autosport, a British magazine, he said, “ I need a little bit more time to see about myself and how we are heading, and some input to see if that is what I want or not.” This sparked the issue in the world wide web that he might be retiring after. Also, he didn’t renew his… Continue Reading »
