Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series Surprises At Nurburgring Roll Racing

Giancarlo Perlas May 16, 2018

It looks like the Nurburgring is the latest site where the Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series is making known its power and speed. Normally, the Nurburgring is where cars are being tested and the ultimate way for us mere mortals to get spy shots of the latest in cars, SUVs, and trucks.

Apparently, it is also the perfect venue for roll racing. What is roll racing, you ask? Roll racing is the latest form of motorsport in the racing world where recreational racers go if they want to race their cars and have fun in a safe and controlled environment.

The two other forms of racing—drag racing and road course racing—have their risks, challenges, and issues, particularly because some of them are being held in the streets. Roll racing is a lot safer because it happens on the race track.

The concept is that the race will start while the wheels are turning, particularly when the car reached 50 kph. There’s a marshaling point where the drivers set off. Once you get up to 50 kph and the lights turned from orange to green, the race starts along the front straight to the finish line, which is about 250 meters away. It’s a short race, but it’s able to see the quickest car to get to the finish line.

The secret to roll racing is not to have the car with the most horsepower or the biggest tires. It’s a well-set-up car that can deliver the power to the ground and use it correctly that usually wins the race.

Now, back to the Mercedes SLS AMG Black Edition. It held up fine against the other rides, even winning quite a number of races against powerful engines. Among those it raced against are a Camaro SS, C63 AMG, Challenger Hellcat, McLaren MP4 12C, and Audi RS6 Avant. As you can see from the video, though there is no light to show who won, the SLS AMG put up a good fight and held its own against more powerful engines.
