Mercedes’ Racing Driver Who Never Competed

Most of today’s car enthusiasts, Mercedes-specific or otherwise, would not know who Rudolf Uhlenhaut was. Born in London to a German banker and his English wife, Rudi, as he has become known, was an engineer who joined Mercedes-Benz in the 1930s. Working at first under engineer Fritz Nallinger with the development of the model 170V, Uhlenhaut eventually became head of the Mercedes-Benz racing department, which produced such notable Mercedes race cars as the W125 (dominant in the 1937 GPs), the W154, W194 and the W196. These cars were all race and championship winners. But as admirable as Uhlenhaut’s engineering skills were his driving skills. He could drive with the best… Continue Reading »

Active Braking Systems, the Latest in Car Braking Systems

Car braking systems have undergone many changes in the past 50 years starting with the introduction of power assisted brakes that were designed to provide better braking capabilities with less effort from the driver. While power brakes did indeed add to the overall safety in most cars as they allowed any driver to reach full braking power with minimal effort, there have been a number of advances on this very basic technology that have made significant improvements. One such innovation was antilock car braking systems that were introduced in the 80s and went on to become mainstream by the turn of the century. Using a sensor mounted on each wheel,… Continue Reading »

Rosberg Finishes 10th in Hungarian GP

Mercedes AMG Petronas had a very disappointing qualifying session, but Nico Rosberg managed to move up a few places on the grid to at least finish with a championship point. Unfortunately, teammate Michael Schumacher was unable to do the same and had to retire after 58 laps. All this happened as McLaren Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the race from pole position despite some good challenge from the Lotus drivers. “In the race today, I had a good start and was able to gain three positions by the end, so I got the most out of it,” said Rosberg. “Being happy with one point is not an ideal situation though… I… Continue Reading »

2012 Hungarian Grand Prix: Hamilton Gets Pole as Mercedes Sputters in Qualifying

McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took pole position in the qualifying at the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix, while the Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers both struggled to get good runs. Nico Rosberg barely missed getting into Q3 and ended up finishing 13th, while teammate Michael Schumacher managed just 17th. Following Hamilton in the grid order are Romain Grosjean (Lotus), Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Jenson Button (McLaren Mercedes), and Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus). “That was a difficult qualifying for us today, and we need to analyse why it turned out like that,” Rosberg said. “Qualifying is always a compromise and I was focused on finding a good race set-up for tomorrow as we… Continue Reading »

2014 S-Class Interior and Exterior Spy Shots

Bit by bit, we’re seeing the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class in its entirety. This latest crop of spy shot photos show not just a very minimally shrouded vehicle, but also some snaps of the fine interior. We’ve already covered some of the exterior details in previous posts, but what’s interesting here is the interior furnishings. You’ll notice the redesigned steering wheel on this baby, along with some nifty details that are surely looking good. You’ve got the finish on the dash, complete with bezeled components. There are also fairly large LCD displays on the console. The styling is certainly a fusion of classic and modern Mercedes-Benz design, and should appeal to… Continue Reading »

Mercedes Gearing Up for 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

After a decent but ultimately lacklustre showing in its home race at Hockenheim, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team is now ready to move on and is preparing for the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend. Hungary marks the start of the second half of the 2012 F1 season, and it is also the last race before a month-long hiatus (the Belgian Grand Prix isn’t until September 2). Hungary is a “challenging track,” as described by Nico Rosberg, featuring 10 of the 14 total corners that have to be taken at 155 kph or less. In addition, 13 percent of each lap is spent just for braking. There are 11… Continue Reading »
