Introducing The Mercedes-Benz Vision Urbanetic Self-Driving Vehicle

Giancarlo Perlas September 11, 2018

A new concept vehicle in the form of the Mercedes-Benz Vision Urbanetic was recently unveiled. The new concept product from Mercedes-Benz Vans division features self-shifting and self-driving features.

Mercedes refers to the Vision Urbanetic as a “revolutionary mobility concept”. It is an autonomous vehicle and its chassis is powered by an electric battery. The body of the van features a modular design that enables it to switch between a passenger vehicle and cargo transport.

Self-Driving Features

The Vision Urbanetic is equipped with multiple sensors and cameras. These let the auto detect and avoid obstacles. The display on its front allows the vehicle to communicate to pedestrians of its status if it has stopped and it is safe for people to cross.

The van also has route-adaptation trait that uses real-time traffic information. Mercedes mentions that it has “self-learning IT infrastructure” too, but its maker does not tell us what that phrase really means.

Modular Design

As a passenger van, the Vision Urbanetic can house up to 12 people. On the other hand, its cargo module can accommodate 10 EPAL pallets. The vehicle has a length of 5.14 meters with 3.70 meters of load space.

Meanwhile, the interior of the Vision Urbanetic can be personalized depending on the needs of its occupants or the requirements of the cargo it holds. Moreover, being a self-driving vehicle, it is no longer fitted with steering wheel, pedals and dashboard. The absence of the said elements frees up a lot of room inside the auto for passengers or cargo.

Power Unit

Mercedes hadn’t discussed the specifics of the electric battery that will power the Vision Urbanetic’s production version. It is possible that it will use the same batteries found in the EQ range of the automaker.
