F1: Vettel Wins 3rd Straight Title; Schumacher Bids Farewell with 7th Place Finish

The safety car escorted the remaining cars through the chequered flag at the end of the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, effectively ending the 2012 F1 season—with Sebastian Vettel officially taking his third-straight drivers’ championship and being the youngest player to do so. Meanwhile, compatriot Michael Schumacher was able to hold on for some nice points, finishing at 7th in a chaotic rain-filled race. Upcoming Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who managed to wrest the race lead from erstwhile leader Nico Hulkenberg, got clipped by the same car with 15 laps left and the McLaren-Mercedes suffered suspension damage that forced him into retire. As expected, the rain led to many slips and… Continue Reading »

SLS Vs. 458 Matchup Raises A Few Questions

If you’ve still got any doubt that the Mercedes SLS AMG is a supercar, if not an exotic, then take a look at this video of Mercedes-AMG’s hellion matched up against a Ferrari 458.  On paper, the engines of the two cars are pretty much even, both being highly-tuned V8s, and being a couple of horsepower shy of 565 stallions. However, the stats will show that the Ferrari is about 250 pounds lighter than the SLS AMG. That’s the equivalent of one or two passengers. Which makes it a bit of a surprise why the Ferrari doesn’t get a big jump on the SLS on the acceleration runs. Torque and… Continue Reading »

Tuner CK63 RS Coaxes 640 Hp From Twin Turbo V8

Slowing its rise only when it reaches 260 kilometers per hour, this Carlsson-tuned CLS 63 AMG shows the potential of Mercedes’ a tuned twin turbo V8. Known as the type M157, this engine is a refinement by AMG of what  was originally the M278 engine developed for the S-Class. After extensive modification by AMG, this engine got the M157 designation. When an outside tuner like Carlsson is able to extract 640 horsepower from an engine already tuned by AMG to 560 hp, one wonders about the degree of conservatism that the factory tuners built into their work. Seeing the into to the video of how the CK63 RS absolutely lays… Continue Reading »

F1: Rosberg P9, Schumi P13 as Hamilton Gets Pole in Brazilian GP

There was tension all around a damp Interlagos for the qualifying session of the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, with the battle for the title going down the wire. It was soon-to-be Mercedes AMG Petronas driver Lewis Hamilton who took pole position, while current drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher will start at P9 and P13 on the grid, respectively. Rosberg and Schumacher actually qualified at P10 and P14, but a reprimand for then-P6 Pastor Maldonado—his third of the season, warranting an automatic 10-place grid penalty—bumped the rest of the field from P16 and higher up one spot. “To progress into Q3 and the top 10 in qualifying today was a… Continue Reading »

F1: Brazilian GP Preview—End of an Era as Schumacher Retires

It’s the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, the last stop of the current Formula One season. As it is the end of another exciting F1 year, this race will also likely herald the end of an era—the Michael Schumacher era, in the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team. It will be the 7-time champion’s final race for the team, as Lewis Hamilton has been signed for next year to run alongside Nico Rosberg. Calling Michael’s brief, and rather uneventful, 3-year stint with the Mercedes team an ‘era’ might be a tad premature, but considering what he brought to the team, he still had a definite impact in the identity and visibility for… Continue Reading »

Looking Back at the Mercedes-Benz AMG and Ducati Partnership

It was only a year ago that Mercedes-Benz AMG had a pretty solid marketing partnership with the premium motorcycle manufacturer Ducati. That partnership ended on the heels of Ducati being acquired by Audi, a Mercedes-Benz rival in the luxury car market. Even with the partnership having ended several months ago, it’s still nice to look back at the partnership that served as a true marvel for design and performance. The partnership has resulted in some pretty nifty collaborations, such as the Ducati Diavel AMG Special Edition, which made its way to the stage of the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. There was also the couple of ‘streetfighter yellow’ models outed by… Continue Reading »
