Mercedes-Benz G550 SUV Starts at $113,000

For those who are looking for style, performance, and a decent set of off-road capabilities from their SUVs, the Mercedes-Benz G550 is an excellent choice. MBUSA offers these vehicles starting at $113,000 (MSRP) with the 5.5-liter V8 engine, 382 horsepower, and a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds max. While the G550 is capable enough on off-road paths, one also has to wonder when specially designed trail-optimized options would be available at Mercedes-Benz dealers, like when new Trail Teams Special Edition packages started to be sold at Toyota FJ Cruiser dealerships. Those were received fairly well by the public, and with the resurgence of off-roading and of other outdoor activities, there… Continue Reading »

Smaller Mercedes-Benz G-Class in the Works? “Mini-G” Could Launch by 2015

If the Samsung Galaxy S III has a Samsung Galaxy Mini, then the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen has… the Mini-G? There is a lot of buzz these days about Mercedes’ plans to launch a smaller G-Wagen, and this unit—codenamed “Mini-G” internally and said to be slated to have a GLG badge—will be based on the A-Class and could be launched sometime around the middle of 2015. As expected, there are barely any details about the vehicle at the moment—even the name isn’t final yet—but it is expected that it will feature many physical traits similar to the original G-Wagen while having internal components like a smaller engine range. Of course, there might… Continue Reading »

G65 AMG Won’t Hit US Shores

The high-performance Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG G-Wagen will not be accompanying the rest of its Mercedes-Benz G-Class brethren when they enter US territory later in 2012. That’s a bit of a disappointment for the many who want to see the powerhouse on American soil and for the few who could actually afford one. Specs-wise, the G65 AMG is very much in the neighborhood of the highly-touted Lamborghini Urus super SUV, something the Italian automaker hopes to make into the most powerful production unit in its class. The G65 comes with a 6-liter twin-turbo V12—the same one on the S65 AMG—that allows the tweaked G-Class unit to provide a monstrous 612 horsepower… Continue Reading »

Mercedes-Benz G-Class’ PR Nightmare

Mercedes-Benz has been able to recover from the setback that the G-Class experienced in the Australian Outbacks, after their PR attempt for the G-Class backfired. The parts had been flown in and the mechanics where able to replace the damaged shock absorbers. Mercedes-Benz has overcome suspension issues to become first car maker to make it through one of Australia’s toughest roads. They traveled over 1600 kilometers, even passed a burnt-out Ford Explorer and a shell of a HiLux crew cab lying on its side – a stark reminder that the stunningly isolated outback route is also one of the more dangerous for the under-prepared. If you can still remember, the… Continue Reading »

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Takes Two Titles in “Off Road” Reader Survey

The recent reader survey from “Off Road” saw the Mercedes-Benz G-Class awarded with two wins, taking first place in both the Luxury off-road vehicle category and in the Classic category. The wins put the G-Class in the specialist publication’s winners’ circle for the eighth year, and as such staked its claim as the Off-road Vehicle of the Year. The G-Class was not the only winner for Mercedes-Benz, however. The Unimog multi-purpose four wheel drive medium truck was also considered by a majority of Off Road readers to be the best in the Special Vehicles category. With over three decades of production under its belt, the G-Class is the longest-serving model… Continue Reading »

G-Class to Receive Minor Facelift ahead of Paris Motor Show

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is an iconic vehicle. Technically speaking, the car is old enough to tell bedtime stories to modern cars. Launched over 31 years ago, the G-class has aged gracefully and slowly earned its reputation of being the best off-roader, the ‘old-school’ style. Though rarely, but the car has been updated by Mercedes-Benz to keep pace with the ever-changing automotive industry. Once again we are at a threshold of witnessing another design and technical update to the historical vehicle. According to trusted sources from inside the G-Klasse’s manufacturing facility at Graz, Austria, the vehicle is all set to receive a minor facelift. This facelift is its third in the… Continue Reading »
