Mercedes-Benz Classic to Field 500 SL at ADAC Eifel Rally

At the ADAC Eifel Rally Festival, which is set to be held from July 25 through 27, Mercedes-Benz Classic is set to field a 500 SL rally version. At the helm of the vehicle will be Björn Waldegård, a former winner of the Bandama Rally in 1980 while driving a Mercedes-Benz 500 SLC. The classic vehicle is actually one that was prepared for competition in 1981. It is based on the Roadster and was meant to succeed the coupe units Mercedes-Benz used for international rally competitions back then. Sadly, the brand halted rally activities before the 1981 season started. Now, it gets to see some action in a rally event. With… Continue Reading »

Mercedes-Benz SSK Booked for 2013 ‘Elephant Race’ at Nurburgring

Mercedes-Benz Classic is set to field the 225hp Mercedes-Benz SSK at the 2013 ‘Elephant Race’, which will be held as part of the ADAC Eifel Race that runs from June 14 through 16. Jochen Mass will be the one at the helm, competing for the Jan Wellem Cup. This participation is meant to commemorate Rudolf Caracciola’s win in 1927. Caracciola, driving a Mercedes-Benz S, helped score a double win with Adolf Rosenberger. The SSK stands for ‘super-sport-kurz’, as a way of showing the evolution from the Mercedes-Benz S. The S was followed by the SS (‘super sport’) in 1928, and then the SSK  by the end of that year. These… Continue Reading »

In order to establish a “long-term collaboration,” Mercedes-benz Classic and 1000 Miglia S.R.L., the entity behind Mille Miglia endurance race, have struck a partnership that will see Mercedes-Benz become the main automotive sponsor for the event. As expected because of the company’s extensive participation in the event throughout its history, Mercedes-Benz will be fielding a number of vehicles in this year’s iteration of the Mille Miglia. Some Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors will also be present and will participate, including former F1 drivers David Coulthard, Karl Wendlinger, and Jochen Mass. Mercedes-Benz 600 Owned by Saddam Hussein Surfaces

Ferdinand Marcos, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, and Saddam Hussein. What do these guys have in common? They all had a Mercedes-Benz 600 to drive. Zac Estrada over at Jalopnik wrote about  the Mercedes-Benz 600 owned by Hussein, perhaps among the most infamous personalities in modern history. This particular 600 is of the 1978 model year, and it has been left in the basement of the Petersen Automotive Museum for years. It’s a good thing that Estrada showed it to us in all its un-restored glory. As the article states, the Saddam-owned vehicle might never see a museum’s floor and there are no plans to restore it. In fact, the car is… Continue Reading »

Mercedes-Benz Bags Two Wins in Auto Zeitung’s Auto Trophy Classic

Two classic Mercedes-Benz cars took wins in their respective categories in the 2013 edition of the Auto Zeitung Classic Cars magazine’s Auto Trophy Classic. Over 23,500 readers chimed in and cast their votes, and the Mercedes-Benz 600 and 123-series T-Model estate emerged with victories. The 600 topped the luxury class category, while the 123-series T-Model estate took top honors in the mid-range class. The T-Model estate is a precursor to what is now the E-Class range of vehicles, and it was the first estate model developed by Mercedes-Benz in-house. “Classic cars and modern classics from Mercedes-Benz are among the icons of automotive history,” said Mercedes-Benz Classic chief Michael Bock. “The… Continue Reading »

Mercedes-Benz Classic Calendar Marries Mimmo Rotella Art with Historic S-Class Imagery

The Mercedes-Benz Classic Calendar 2013, which is available now, should be a great calendar choice for Silver Arrow enthusiasts and car/art lovers in general. It offers people some neat visuals that will surely add character to any room—Mimmo Rotella decollage-style poster art is mixed with images of S-Class models from the past. Basically, you get 12 images (one per month, of course) of decollages and images of S-Class cars from 1904 onward. Each image was merged together by Monty Shadow, a Croatian-born artist. The calendar is intended to be a tribute to the luxury saloon models that have come before, while also ushering in a new era of S-Class design…. Continue Reading »
