smart Production Plant Celebrates Milestone

One million five hundred thousand cars. Any way you look at it, it’s a landmark production achievement for a car that redefined what was possible for an urban commuter. This milestone was represented by a white smart forwo electric drive cabrio. It was also one of the last vehicles to roll of the production line at Hambach, Lorraine, whose production will be paused for almost two months in July and August. This is due to renovations to large parts of the production installation, in anticipation of future production requirements. The smart plant in Hambach was inaugurated in 1997 and has produced the smart fortwo since 1998. Approximately 1,500 people work at… Continue Reading »

Daimler is going to try expanding the smart product line once again, this time with an electric scooter that’s set to bolster the brand in 2014. The new product is seen as something that not only ties up with the company’s goals, but also as something that can perk up smart’s earning power. In terms of sales figures and earnings, smart isn’t exactly the cash cow among Daimler’s many divisions. With losses adding up to around 1.5 billion euros ($1.93 billion) since 1998, it’s important to expand the product range. The electric scooter will also help solidify smart’s status as a specialist for city transport, since allows the brand to… Continue Reading »

Mercedes-Benz USA Names Webster New smart GM on Top of Other Moves

Mercedes-Benz USA has just named previous pre-owned and fleet ops general manager Mark Webster as the new overall smart GM, replacing Tracey Matura, who then moves on to Chicago to become the GM for the central region. The shuffling becomes official on May 1. “Leveraging talent is a great way to drive a company’s corporate culture,” said MBUSA president and CEO Steve Cannon. He added that he expects “fresh perspectives” and skill sets to help the company sustain the  momentum it’s enjoying right now. There’s a domino effect, of course.
