The 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix showcased a stellar performance from the Mercedes team as Lewis Hamilton secured a commendable fourth place, and George Russell displayed his prowess with an impressive sixth-place finish. The race, which took place in Budapest, proved to be a rollercoaster ride for both drivers, making for an exciting and gripping spectacle on the track.

The 2023 Hungarian GP Results

Hamilton, starting on pole with a medium tire, faced intense pressure from Max Verstappen, eventually losing positions to the Red Bull star driver as well as McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in the opening corners. Meanwhile, Russell, who began from P18 on the hard tire, made remarkable progress, gaining multiple places and running in 15th place early on.

In the initial stages, Hamilton’s car balance was less than optimal, causing him to struggle with understeer and snap oversteer. However, as the stints progressed, the car’s performance improved, leading to a remarkable final stint where he closed in on the third-place spot.

Russell, on the other hand, demonstrated outstanding driving skills throughout the race. Despite being eliminated in Q1, he pushed hard and displayed determination, making a strategic tire change on lap 28 to the medium compound. This move proved decisive, enabling him to move up the field and secure a fantastic sixth place, overtaking Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and benefiting from Charles Leclerc’s penalty.

The aftermath of the event marked another win for Verstappen and pole finishes for Norris and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez on second and third, respectively. On the other hand, it gave 12- and 8-point gains for Hamilton and Russell, respectively.

Now, Hamilton sits in fourth place of the F1 2023 Drivers’ Standings with a total of 133 points while Russell follows in fifth place with 90 points. The added scores also increases Mercedes F1’s points in the 2023 Constructors’ Standings with 223 points, which further solidifies its position in the second place of the rankings.

It may be a long shot against Red Bull’s 452 points but it’s still 39 points more than the third-placer, McLaren.

Statements from the Team

Reflecting on his performance, Hamilton acknowledged his initial struggles but took pride in the team’s effort to secure pole position. He praised the team’s progress in understanding the car but expressed determination to challenge Red Bull for Grand Prix victories going forward.

Lastly, Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin shared his insights, revealing the challenges faced with engine temperatures but praising Russell’s outstanding result and the gains made in the Constructors’ Championship.
