Mercedes Launches E300 BlueTEC HYBRID

In Stuttgart, Mercedes recently announced its new E300 BlueTEC HYBRID. This diesel hybrid boasts of a fuel consumption of only 4.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. Efficiency without compromise, such is Mercedes’ mantra for its automobiles, and the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID is no exception. In the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, Mercedes-Benz has combined the 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine developing 204 hp with a powerful hybrid module. Its 15 kW electric motor, positioned between the internal combustion engine and the 7-speed automatic transmission, assists the diesel engine when the car is accelerating to provide additional boost in power and in alternator mode, is used for the recuperation of braking energy…. Mercedes-Benz to build Hybrid R&D center in Michigan

Earlier this week, Mercedes-Benz has reported that they will be expanding their hybrid technologies by building an R&D center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The focus of the operation, called The Mercedes-Benz Engineering Center for Powertrains USA, will be developing hybrid transmissions, electric motor technology, software, and power electronics. Mercedes-Benz is looking at a 65,000 square-foot facility, which should house the R&D center and employ 223 new workers in the coming 10 years. It’s an investment worth nearly $10 million. California and South Carolina were also considered for the R&D center, but it seems Michigan gave them the best tax break, nearly $7.5 million over the next ten years.

Mercedes-Benz working on a SLK Gullwing?

Is Mercedes-Benz prepping a new low-end Gullwing? Well according to AutoExpress, Mercedes has plans to bring a new SLK Gullwing to the masses, which may look very similar to its bigger brother, the SLC Gullwing. Besides having some amazing gullwing doors, and draw inspiration from the legendary 300SL, it is also supposed to be hybrid. With some very muscular lines, it will be a big change compared to the current SLK (which women love to drive). The hood is much longer and due to the gullwing doors, the side sills will be much higher than on normal cars. The designers actually took that weakness and turned it into an opportunity…. Seeing the official pictures and reading thought the details on the S400 BluHYBRID is one thing, but seeing the S400 in action is another. Check out the trailer and see how the 3.5-liter gasoline engine, which develops an output of 279 hp / 205 kW, and the electric motor, which generates 20 hp / 15 kW and a starting torque of 160 Nm, work together in harmony.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hybrid coming in June 2009

BusinessWeek is reporting that Mercedes-Benz will start European sales of a hybird version of its luxury S-Class in June of 2009. The U.S. and China will start receiving theirs in September of 2009. While Klaus Maier, Sales and Marketing Director at Mercedes, didn’t reveal the price tag for the hybrid S-Class, he did mention the premium wil be less than 10,000 Euro or $14,000 compred to a non-hybrid S-Class. The main innovation is the lithium-ion battery. Developed along with German components supplier Continental, the battery weighs less and takes up less space than batteries used by competing hybrids. Mercedes-Benz to produce 20% hybrid vehicles by 2015

Klaus Maier, Mercedes-Benz head of sales, reported today in Stuttgart that every fifth Mercedes should have a Hybrid powertrain by the year 2015. He added that if the government doesn’t change the legal conditions, 20% is realistic. Many have dreamed that Mercedes will eliminate the use of fossil fuel in all their vehicles by 2015, but that of course was only wishful thinking, as they’ll need more time to adapt new technologies and bring it to the masses with an entirely new infrastructure (e.g. fueling stations) According to Auto-Motor-und-Sport, Mercedes has outlined a strategy to start releasing a Hybrid model each yeah, starting in 2009 to achieve their 20% goal…. Daimler Trucks Opens Global Hybrid Center in Japan

Yesterday, Daimler Trucks inaugurated its new Global Hybrid Center at Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) in Kawasaki. Located within the company’s R&D facilities, the Center will be the worldwide hub for Daimler Trucks’ hybrid development. A ceremony was held today to officially open the Center. MFTBC is an integral part of the Daimler Trucks division of Daimler AG, and one of Asia’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers.
