Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Rumored Shift: Downsized Engine And Hybridized Power
Giancarlo Perlas November 9, 2023Mercedes-AMG appears to be steering towards partial electrification for its upcoming CLE 63 model. The rumor mill suggests a notable transformation in the unit—a downsized engine with a hybrid setup.
Revolutionizing Power Dynamics
Sources within the automotive industry hint at a significant shift in the power dynamics of the AMG CLE 63. The anticipated downsizing of the engine is expected to embrace a more sustainable approach, aligning with the growing trend of hybrid technology in high-performance vehicles.
This move, if materialized, marks a continuation of the company’s departure from the conventional powertrains, showcasing its commitment to environmental consciousness.
AMG’s Hybrid Power Play
The heart of this speculation lies in the utilization of an inline-four engine matched to a plug-in hybrid powertrain, echoing the advancements seen in the 2024 C 63 S E Performance sedan and the upcoming 2025 GLC 63 S E Performance crossover.
Under the hood, an upgraded 2.0-liter engine works hand-in-hand with an electric-aided turbocharger, propelling the output to 469 hp. Notably, this powertrain incorporates a mild-hybrid configuration, featuring an integrated electric motor, not only boosting performance but also serving ancillary functions.
Unleashing Electrifying Performance
Moreover, the rear axle is said to house a potent electric motor, delivering an additional boost of up to 201 hp. This supplementary power, coupled with its own 2-speed transmission, elevates the combined output to a staggering 671 hp temporarily.
The integration of a 6.1-kWh battery further solidifies the hybrid identity, offering a glimpse into a small electric range.
Expanding the AMG Lineup
Beyond the AMG CLE 63, sports car enthusiasts can anticipate a broader lineup. Spy shots suggest the introduction of a milder variant, possibly badged as CLE 43, featuring a powertrain like the 2023 AMG C 43 sedan, alongside the CLE 53.
It should be noted, however, that the recent EPA filing of Mercedes hints that the CLE 53 might retain the 3.0-liter inline-6 and an electric motor with specs similar to the recently unveiled 2026 GLE 53 Hybrid. It boasts a combination of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 and an electric motor, generating a total of 536 hp. If this is the case, expect the CLE 63 to take off from here.
Looking Ahead
From the looks of it, Mercedes-AMG appears poised to redefine its performance offerings with the snob of the V8 for the CLE 63. While the details are yet to be officially confirmed, industry insiders anticipate the unveiling of the AMG CLE around the upcoming spring, with sales expected to follow later next year.
