Rare 2007 Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG: A Forgotten High-Performance MPV

Giancarlo Perlas March 31, 2023

When it comes to high-performance vehicles, the Mercedes-AMG lineup has become a household name over the years. The presence of the number “63” in its suffix signifies a car that’s truly special. And in 2007, Mercedes-Benz came out with something that can be considered unique, even for the AMG division: the R63 AMG that’s currently up for grabs in an auction.

Key Features of the R63 AMG

The R-Class was introduced in 2005 as a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). However, the auctioneers at The MB Market just couldn’t help but refer to it as a minivan for some reason.

What made the R63 AMG special was the fact that it was fitted with the same 6.2-liter V8 engine used in other sports car models of the three-pointed star marque like the iconic Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. This produced a whopping 503 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, making it a high-performance vehicle that can haul the whole family with its three-row seating capacity.

Most importantly, the R63 AMG was only offered for one model year, making it one of the rarest AMG models ever built.

Status of the Vehicle on Sale

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG on sale has already covered 144,000 miles in its lifetime and has received recent maintenance, with some paintwork done to fix minor scratches earlier. It comes with a clean title and a CarFax vehicle history report to prove its authenticity.

Additionally, the MPV is originally equipped with a factory air suspension system that can raise and lower its ground clearance on demand, making it versatile in various road conditions. The current owner has installed lowering links though for better handling. Nonetheless, the stock links still come with the sale, should the new owner choose to revert to the original setup.

The R63 AMG’s seller does not mention whether or not it has the optional AMG Driver’s Package, which unlocks the top speed of 171 mph. However, even without it, the vehicle can still max out at 155 mph. Likewise, the unmodified setup lets it achieve a 0-60 mph sprint in around 4.5 seconds, making it a speedy family vehicle even by today’s standards.

Current Bid

The R63 AMG’s auction started with a bid of $2,500 on March 29. As of writing, the current bid for the vehicle is $16,250. There are still six days left before the auction closes.

Given its rarity and high-performance features, it’s no surprise that the bidding is already up to this amount. It will be interesting to see how much the special MPV will fetch in the end.

Final Thoughts

The R63 AMG may be underrated, but it’s a testament to the brand’s pursuit of producing high-performance vehicles in unexpected forms. While it may not have the same cult following as other AMG models, it’s a unique piece of automotive history that deserves special recognition.

Furthermore, the high-performance MPV’s combination of power, practicality, and rarity makes it an excellent choice for collectors looking for something that stands out from the rest.
