Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance Makes Its Much-Awaited Debut

Giancarlo Perlas December 5, 2022

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always played a pivotal role in the success of its brand. Being a flagship car surely gives us a lot of expectations for it. Recently, the three-pointed star brand revealed the most powerful variant of the range so far, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance.

Outside, the AMG S 63 E Performance takes a sportier form thanks to its new Panamericana grille with vertical slats and AMG badge on the side, a circular logo of AMG on the hood, wide rear diffuser, trapezoidal twin-tailpipes, some tweaks on the suspension, and 21-inch AMG forged wheels.

Inside, the car gets AMG-specific graphics in its MBUX infotainment system, drive modes, and head-up display. Likewise, the multi-function steering wheel takes some sporty elements, including its integrated paddle shifters as well as AMG logos here and there.

In addition, it features the same sporty and luxurious treatments provided by AMG for the upholstery highlighted by Nappa leather seats with special stitching. Of course, it benefits from multiple large touchscreen displays, a high-end audio system, and other standard equipment found in the auto’s standard Benz and other AMG versions.

Saving the best for last, the AMG S 63 E Performance is defined by its powerful internal combustion engine (ICE) combined with an electric motor at the rear axle for a strong hybrid powertrain setup. A handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine contributes a lot in squeezing a massive output of 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft of torque.

All that power is directed to Mercedes’ signature 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and distributed via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. It should be noted that the 188 hp electric motor is also governed by an electrically shifting two-speed transmission and electronic limited-slip rear differential making up its compact electric drive unit (EDU). The primary advantage offered by the EDU is that it allows the system to bypass the nine-speed transmission for immediate power delivery in the entire rpm spectrum.

The configuration lets the AMG S 63 E Performance to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated time of 3.2 seconds. However, its max speed is only electronically maxed at 180 mph to preserve the overall integrity of the hybrid, high-performance vehicle.

According to the German automaker, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance is scheduled to hit dealerships in the middle of 2023.
