Spied Mercedes-Benz CLE Convertible Shows Strong Resemblance with the SL

Giancarlo Perlas November 28, 2022

The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLE is an upcoming range that will fill the void left behind by the folding of the C-Class and E-Class coupe and convertible models. Recently, the prototype for the cabrio variant of the new series was spied making its rounds on the road.

The CLE spied by Carbuzz features the typical zebra camouflage wrapped on Mercedes test cars. However, the tight fitting of the covers does give us plenty of hints as to what to expect from the upcoming top-down version of the car.

At a glance, the CLE convertible strikes us as a baby version of the SL. It adopts the more compact layout of the C-Class, especially with its shorter hood, but it’s the SL all the way from there.

The SL is now exclusive to the AMG division, however, the CLE here appears to be coming from the Benz lineup. This is suggested by its single-louver grille surrounded by three-pointed star patterns on the background. Likewise, its wheels and tires are pretty much standard and are not sporty enough to merit the AMG badge. Moreover, it lacks the high-performance brand’s signature subtle front lip and boot lid spoilers.

With those things in mind, we may be looking at the CLE 300 trim of the upcoming convertible, which should mirror the C 300 with 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It should be noted though that there will likely be a customary Edition 1 variant for the new series featuring AMG-level detailing and accessories. Furthermore, expect it to have full-AMG models down the road after its official debut.

At this rate, the Mercedes-Benz CLE convertible and coupe models are projected to debut sometime next year as 2024 model-year vehicles. They will probably start in the mid-£40,000 range based on several sources.
