Facelifted G-Class To Receive Powerful AMG Engines

G55 AMG 597x335 Facelifted G Class To Receive Powerful AMG Engines

There’s more to love with Mercedes’ venerable G-Class, as Mercedes has confirmed that a facelifted version of this rugged offroader is getting even more powerful engines when it’s introduced this year. First off, the G55 AMG will see its supercharged V8 ditched in favor of the 5.5-liter twin turbo V8 found in other AMG vehicles. What this means is that new G55 AMG owners will have 525 horsepower at their disposal. Coupled with its proven four-wheel drive system, there is little terrain this monster can’t conquer. But far from making gas stations your best friends, this engine’s advanced technologies will see it eating up more miles, not gasoline.

But for those who want even more, there is the limited-edition G65 AMG, which confirms the rumor mills of a V12-engined G-Class. Further down the road, a hybrid G-Class is also expected to be released. Decades since its introduction, Mercedes’ improvements to the G-Class continue to make it an evergreen platform.

Mighty V12 G-Class Closer To Showrooms

But this isn’t just any old G-Class you’re looking at, because it’s a test mule for the upcoming G65 AMG that’s being shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

For now, the only noticeable aesthetic changes are the bumper openings, which will have intakes for two additional heat exchangers. They will definitely be needed because under the hood will be Mercedes’ 6-liter V12, which will be producing 612 horsepower after a massage by AMG. If the G65 follows some of the cues of the G55, also expect side exit exhausts to sound off that V12 engine’s bark. If you need to ask, this top-of-the-line G-Class is expected to sell for a quarter million Euros.

If you’re a big fan of the big cars or the SUVs then you should be happy to know that other people are also picking up on that “fandom”. As evidenced by a 2 million units of SUVs sold by Mercedes-Benz, the big, rounded vehicles are now a trend.

Mercedes-Benz head of sales and marketing said, “With the launch of our first sport utility vehicle, the G-Class, more than 30 years ago, we entered a segment in which we are now very successful with a total of five models. The SUVs today are an important pillar of Mercedes-Benz’s growth and have regularly posted a new sales record in every month since July 2010.”

The G-Class was the star, for sometime, but as new cars were developed, the buyers’ interest were diverted. This is not to say that the G-Class lost its appeal, it’s just that the numbers says that the R-Class increased in demand, a whopping 50.3%! The whole SUV line meanwhile, increased by 24.3% as announced by Mercedes-Benz.

The G Wagon AMG models are testing and readying, maybe for an auto show early next year. Undergoing a winter testing in Sweden, the AMG models G55 and G65 has been spotted by the guys from AutoEvolution.

In the photos, it seems like the G55 looks almost the same, with just minimal facelifts. The G65 though shows that a biturbo V12 maybe under it’s box-type body. In the report, the G55 may have the 5.5 liter twin turbo V8 engine that is expected to deliver 525HP, while the G65 gets the 6.0 liter twin-turbo V12 that may produce 612HP.

The exterior design on the other hand shows some changes, new mirrors, front bumper and grille and an improved LED daytime running lights. Inside, the G-classes are having new steering wheels and satnav screen which means that it will be on top of the dashboard.
