DaimlerChrysler and Sutlej Motors plan partnership

DaimlerChrysler AG is planning to enter a Co-operation with the Indian Company Sutlej Motors Ltd (SML) located in Jalandhar, Punjab. The two companies intend to build bus bodies on Mercedes-Benz chassis manufactured by DaimlerChrysler India Pvt. Ltd. (DCIL), which is a 100% subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG.

The collaboration of DaimlerChrysler and SML encompasses the development, production, marketing, sales and after sales of luxury rear engine coaches. The Mercedes-Benz chassis will be manufactured by DCIL, the body will be built up by SML. DCIL then will handle Sales and After-Sales of the coaches. The first vehicles will roll off the line in the first quarter of 2008.


With improved road network in the country and increasing need for efficient public transport systems, the demand for high-end buses is expected to grow. The country will require buses that ensure comfort and convenience of the passenger and at the same time provide the highest degree of safety and environmental performance.

DaimlerChrysler and SML plan to develop their activities which will meet international quality norms in terms of reliability, safety and comfort. Both companies intend to set new standards in the Indian bus segment.

Sutlej Motors Limited located at Jalandhar, Punjab, is a leading manufacturer of coaches and buses and application vehicles in India. Founded in 1935, SML today produces luxury coaches, inter urban buses, long distance buses, modern low floor city buses, low floor airport buses and mini buses.

DaimlerChrysler Buses is the world’s leading manufacturer of buses and coaches. It has around 17,100 employees worldwide and sold 36,000 buses and coaches in 2006.
