Day in History: Carl Benz and his double-pivot steering

In 1886, quite independently of each other, two inventions hit the road: in Mannheim the Benz Patent Motor Car – a vehicle designed from scratch – and in Stuttgart Daimler’s Motorized Carriage – as its name implies, a carriage powered by an engine. Both vehicles were lacking a decisive feature, however: a steering system matched to the vehicle and capable of coping with the prevailing conditions and speeds. These two great pioneers not only enabled mobility to people, but also set the standard for vehicles and their parts. Read more about the great inventors.

The world’s most exclusive open-top luxury saloon

Daimler AG is reporting that they will be adding a fifth Maybach model to its line-up – the Maybach Landaulet. This masterpiece of automotive engineering will not just shower its owner with luxury, such as smooth black leather and trim elements in glossy piano lacquer, but it will also cost EUR 900,000 (or US$ 1.35 million). The first customer vehicles are due to leave Maybach production in autumn 2008.

Ralf Schumacher to join AMG team

Mercedes-Benz Motorsport announced today, that Ralf Schumacher (32), after 11 years in the Formula 1 World Championship, will race this year with the Trilux AMG Mercedes C-Class in the DTM, Ralf Schumacher’s DTM debut will take place at the season opener in Hockenheim on 13th April 2008. Ralf Schumacher tested the AMG Mercedes C-Class during four and a half test days in Estoril, Portugal for about 490 laps; which was more than 2,000 kilometres or approximately 12 DTM race distances. SLR Roadster featured at Toronto Auto Show

The Canadian International Autoshow, which has been running since 1974, is taking place from February 15 to 24 in Toronto, Ontario. The show is situated in the North & South Metro Toronto Convention Centre and Rogers Centre in the heart of downtown Toronto. Over 1,000 new cars and trucks are on display featuring many North American and Canadian premieres. Mercedes-Benz is there as usual and the stunning SLR McLaren Roadster and the specially equipped M-Class Edition 10 are featuring. sideways. a smart art project

Smart will be introducing a book “sideways. a smart art project,” to further emphasize their philosophy of questioning generally accepted ideas. The book will be released on March 19th, 2008 in New York and will feature work by 100 international artits in an attempt to evaluate the way we think about the environment and mobility. This 248 page book will contain work from the fields of photography, illustration, graphic design, painting, sculpture, architecture, styling, hairstyling and make-up. Mercedes will auction DTM racer for a noble cause

For the first time in history, Mercedes-Benz will auction one of its original racing cars (“Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class”) from the DTM (German Touring Car Championships). This was the car which Gary Paffett drove to win the DTM race in Oschersleben last year. The obtained funds will be transfered to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation that funds social sports projects for young people. The auction, which will close on Friday, April 4, 2008, is taken care by Christie’s. Mercedes-Benz has set the minimum bid for the car at $435,000. ICSI collaborates with Diamler to manufacture turbochargers

German auto giant Diamler, have signed a deal with Japanese components maker IHI Charging Systems International (ICSI) to manufacture turbochargers for application in petrol and diesel engines. The manufacturing unit will be built at Arnstadt in eastern Germany and will employ 400 people. IHI Charging Systems International (ICSI) holds the majority stake in this deal. A turbocharger is an exhaust gas driven pump that is used in internal combustion engines to increase the amount of available oxygen available for the engine’s functioning.
