Mercedes Gives Federer First Dibs In Driving The 2012 SLS AMG Roadster

When you’re a world tennis champion, playing the game gets to be work and not all fun anymore. Which is why Roger Federer must have jumped at the chance to drive the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. As the champ says, it’s seriously cool, and may we add, seriously fast. With a 560 horsepower V8 propelling this open-top supercar, the experience must be visceral, to say the least.

It’s also to Mercdes’ benefit that they were able to get Federer to talk about the car. Few sportsmen exude the classiness and grace that Federer does, and this is what the SLS AMG Roadster also is.

Uncovered: 2012 SLS AMG Roadster

Are you ready for the SLS AMG’s next incarnation? Well, just to give you a sneak peek of what it’s going to look like, here are some spy photographs of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster under no camouflage whatsoever. These images are courtesy of the guys at World Car Fans.

The first thing that will probably catch your eye is the shift to a light brown soft top roof. We must admit, it looks kinds of weird and gives the SLS AMG some sort of a softer attitude. Regardless, that’s probably what Mercedes-Benz was shooting for in the roadster version of the next SLS AMG. Ladies, what do you think? Will this pull your attention away from the E-Class Cabrio which is oozing with Sex in the City appeal?

We don’t have to explain why the 2012 roadster no longer has the iconic Gullwing doors. What you can expect, however, is that it will retain the same 6.3-liter V8 which is capable of embarrassing other supercars on the Autobahn with its 563hp and 650Nm output. With a zero to sixty mph sprint time of 4.0 seconds flat, we assure you that the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster is no softie. It can glide at 192 mph tops while keeping you in control and looking good.

As for its public debut? Probably at the Frankfurt auto show in September this year. The timeframe should give you enough time to plan on leaving for Germany.

Drawing Submissions Leak To Reveal Smart Roadster Design

With the New Year comes reports that Mercedes-Benz has trademarked a design for a smart roadster. The two-seat runabout is unmistakably a smart design and the drawings show a remarkably appealing vehicle that looks to be a hit if it is produced. Topless roadsters always evoke images of fun and spirited driving but of course, given the smart car’s current engines, the spirited part of the equation might not be up to the task.

The designs look to be a preview for the next generation of the smart fortwo line. Although the designs – courtesy of the patent office – are for a topless two-seater, it is not hard to imagine smart putting a roof on the preview and selling it as the replacement for the current fortwo. The Tridion safety cell is still in place and the overall shape evokes smart designs but a lot of detail work has been done to make the car look new.

However, all the information at the moment comes from the pictures that have made it to the Internet. There is nothing yet on the mechanicals or other detail and so the public will have to wait and see what other information filters through over time.

2012 SLS AMG Roadster to Debut Next Year

Speaking with Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes Benz-AMG head Ola Kaellenius revealed its most important launch of next year, that of the Roadster version of the SLS AMG which would have its world debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show on September 2011. The SLS AMG Roadster is expected to be on sale after that as a 2012 model.

Also being introduced would be a fuel saving cylinder deactivation system for its 5.5-liter V-8, which would also have a twin turbocharger system to help provide the power that AMG customers want, and expect, from their luxury sports cars. Compared to the previous 6.3-liter powermill, the 5.5-liter version will also have an output of 571 horsepower but torque will be massively improved to 664 foot-pounds over the 6.3-liter’s 479 foot-pounds. This huge increase in torque will definitely show itself through improved driveability and response.

There is a lot of speculation on whether the Roadster will be a folding hard-top or a soft-top variant, as the latest spy shots seem to reveal. This will allow the car to be light and nimble, as befitting a proper sports car.

Initial price should be slightly higher than the approximately $257,000 set for the Gullwing Coupe. Mercedes-Benz also plans to add an all-electric version of the car a few years down the road.
