You might have heard about the rumors that Mercedes-Benz and AMG are working on a roadster version for the newly released SLS AMG. Well now we actually have some evidence that supports those rumors in the form of prototype drawings. Autobild released half a dozen shots of what will be a 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. The drawings were taken from the German patent office, which makes it even more legit.

The new SLR Stirling Moss is characterised by the most sophisticated technology and a breathtaking design which reinterprets the SLR legend. With 478 kW/650 hp the SLR Stirling Moss accelerates its V8 supercharged engine from standstill to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 350 km/h – no other series-production car is at the same time so open and so fast.
This extreme concept makes the new high-performance sports car a legitimate bearer of the name of the British motor racing legend and Mille Miglia record-holder Stirling Moss, who drove the legendary Mercedes-Benz SLR racing cars from victory to victory in 1955. The exclusive SLR Stirling Moss rounds off the current SLR family and is limited to 75 units. It is priced at 750,000 euros (excl. VAT). The SLR Roadster will cease to be manufactured at the end of May 2009 as planned, and production of the SLR Stirling Moss will commence in June 2009.

Welcome back everyone, hope you enjoyed the holidays and the time with your family. I am sure Santa treated you with some nice gifts this year, maybe even a new Benz.
To kick things off again, we’ll start with a somewhat disappointing story. It seems that even tough Mercedes-Benz will unveil the new SLR Roadster (Stirling Moss) at the Detroit Auto Show; it will not sell the roadster in the US market, according to some sources. Only 75 Stirling Moss SLRs will be built starting in June 2009. The roadster will carry a price tag of $1.04 million; current SLR owners will most likely get the option at buying it first.

While we’ve actually heard Mercedes execs mention small cars and the U.S. multiple times in the same sentence, we didn’t think that they have this in mind – an A-Class based roadster. AutoWeek is reporting that Dieter Zetsche is considering a proposal for a two-seat roadster based on the A- and B-class. The compact front-wheel-drive roadster revives the idea behind the striking Vision SLA concept revealed at the Detroit auto show in 2000 (pictured above).
The decision for an A-Class roadster, which would be positioned below the SLK, might have something to do with VW plans on introducing a new mid-engine roadster. BMW is also planning an even smaller roadster than the current Z4, a 1-series based Z2 roadster.
Small cars are definitely the new trend, but how small should Mercedes go? Should they run behind BMW and the rest of the competition and release a model every time someone releases something. Well that’s definitely a good plan to fight the competition, but what will happen to the Mercedes brand when they become a “me-too” manufacturer. I say they bring back the smart roadster, which to me seems to be a better fit, than introduce a smart-like A-Class roadster.

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster has won the Internet Auto Award 2008. Voted top in the Convertibles & Roadsters category, it received the prestigious CAROLINA award. This year again over 300,000 people cast their votes in Europe’s largest Internet public award. 154 vehicles in nine categories were judged by Internet users of AutoScout24 throughout Europe. From a line-up totalling 18 high-quality convertibles and roadsters competing for the award, they voted the Mercedes-Benz SL as their favourite.

The Mercedes-Benz Cars division sold a total of 111,100 vehicles in May 2008, a decrease of 4% from the 116,000 units sold in May 2007. Unit sales over the first 5 months of the year rose 10% at the division, reaching a new record level of 548,800 vehicles (January-May 2007: 500,500).
