SMART UK celebrates first decade with limited edition GB-10

smart fortwo gb 10 edition launched 23595 1 597x397 SMART UK celebrates first decade with limited edition GB 10

It has been ten years since Smart sold its first vehicle in the UK. To celebrate the occasion, the company launched a brand new limited edition model that they’re calling the Smart Fortwo GB-10. It will be up for display in the Smart Festival that will fall on the 4th of September this year. How limited? Smart UK says that they’ll only be selling 100 of these babies, which will all be wearing a special ‘1 of 100′ badge.

The GB-10 will have four variants, namely the 50 MHD Coupe, the 10 MHD Cabrio, the 30 CDI Coupe and the 10 CDI Cabrio. Each of these will have Pioneer’s AVIC-F910BT audio and navigation system, air conditioning, power windows, and Panoramic roof, all of which will be standard equipment.

To make the GB-10 even more special, Smart is throwing in a good dose of Brabus hardware. All variants will have Brabus’ Monoblock Vii 15″ alloys, LED daytime running lights and third brake lamp. If you opt for the Premium interior package, Smart will put an extra GB-10 logo on the Brabus shift knob and the emergency brake. The GB-10 logo will also be sown onto heated, Rosso-red leather seats. The same bit of luxury will be present on the door panels, kneepad as well as e-brake gator, while the upper-half of the dashboard will be a contrast between black Alcantara and silver on much of the instruments.

Smart Limited Silver Edition as palate appetizer

smart fortwo limited silver edition launched 22557 1 Smart Limited Silver Edition as palate appetizer

We know you’re all waiting for news of the second generation Smart model, which is set to launch at the Paris Auto Show in September by the way. But it looks like you have to wait a little while longer. In the meantime, Smart decided to launch something to keep you preoccupied—the Smart Limited Silver Edition, which is based on the Passion version with a little bit more, worth around 2,000 euros, thrown into the package for a price tag of 12,990 euros.

You’ll find traces of Brabus styling all over the Spec-Ed which is powered by an environmentally-safe micro hybrid drive, or MHD, engine that’s capable of 71 horsepower. Not much but hey, it’ll take you around town in acceptable comfort. The MHD incorporates a start-stop system that shuts your engine off when resting at full stop, and then turns it on upon depressing either the throttle or clutch pedals. The system effectively cuts down fuel consumption and, thus, carbon dioxide emissions.

The Spec-Ed is going to be offered in both stylish silver or gray metallic finishes. Inside it is Smart’s Radio 9 with an MP3 and CD player, a lockable glove box,and Smartl’s iPhone drive kit, otherwise known as the Smart Bluetooth headset.

We’ll let your eyes and our photos do the talking from this point onward.

World’s smallest mobile TV studio on a Smart Fortwo

smart remixes your reality in worlds smallest tv studio 21958 1 597x335 World’s smallest mobile TV studio on a Smart Fortwo

Smart’s latest attempt to reach out to the whole world comes in the form of a small mobile TV studio. It happens to be the smallest of its kind in the world as well. Included in the tour, which began on July 2, are Rome, Berlin, Paris, London and Barcelona. The studio will be offering locals a drive around their city on the latest Smart Fortwo as ambassadors for ‘urban mobility and lifestyle’.

The studio is a Smart Fortwo that’s heavily equipped with video camers, five in all, located both inside and outside the vehicle. So it’s kind of like having your very own TV crew cover your journey around the city. But it’s not all about a bunch of locals driving the latest Smart vehicle. No. It’s more of a TV coverage of urban lifestyles divided into four different formats, namely fashion, music, speed dating and urban view.

We’re pretty sure speed dating got your ears hooked. It’s all in keeping with Smart’s ‘Remix Your Reality’ backdropped by urban culture and lifestyle. By exploring the phenomena of speed dating, Smart successfully employs its marketing scheme with loads of fashion and music. So this is something you definitely do not want to miss.

Dealerships to be equipped with Elektrobay EV recharging docks

elektrobay Dealerships to be equipped with Elektrobay EV recharging docks

To support the rising number of electric vehicles in the United Kingdom, Mercedes-Benz and Smart are setting up a program that’ll put EV recharging stations across all their dealerships in Great Britain. Actually, it has already started with around 20 recharging units having been delivered by manufacturer British Elektromotive. These units were distributed among 7 locations, with more units on their way for this year.

Right now, electric vehicles are of high priority for both companies, and that’s why they’re putting in place recharging docks to make things easier on both ends – for dealers and for buyers. Managing Director for Mercedes-Benz Cars Dermot Kelly is glad to have Elektromotive as their partner in putting up the Elektrobay recharging docks. Elektromotive Managing Director Calvey Taylor-Haw adds that its her company’s first time to work so actively with a car manufacturer. She believes the Elektrobay project will revolutionize the way other electric car manufacturers will conduct their business. It’s an entire restructuring of electric vehicle recharging application.

Later his year, probably around summer, Smart will be letting the public have their take on their zero-emission electric drive For-Two vehicles. The Elektrobays have all been set up around various Mercedes-Benz and Smart dealerships to facilitate the test drives.

From Fortwo, Smart now has Forfour

smart forfour new concept larger fortwo
Everybody enjoyed the Smart’s Fortwo, which has prompted smart to increase its vehicle lineup. One way they’ll try this is by re-introducing the Fortwo into the market. It will be very similar to the current Fortwo, but will use a lengthened version of the Fortwo platform, complete with its rear-engined/rear-drive layout. It will share this platform with Renault’s next Twingo and will be built alongside it at Renault’s factory at Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

The Forfour also adopt a combination of conventionally hinged front doors and sliding rear ones; the latter set-up was previewed on Mercedes’ F800 Style Geneva show concept. Inside, the Forfour will provide seating for four adults. As with the Fortwo, the seats will be set high for ease of entry. Luggage space will be limited, with the boot compartment sitting above the engine at the rear. But fold-down rear seats will be standard, allowing owners to tailor the space to their own requirements.

Power for the new Forfour will come from a new range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that are under development as part of the Daimler/Renault-Nissan co-operation. Set to range in capacity from 1.2 to 1.8 liters, the new direct-injection petrol and common-rail diesel units will find their way into a wide range of compact Mercedes, Nissan, Renault and Smart models. In both Smarts, the engines will be mated to a dual-clutch gearbox.

Smart is also planning to provide the new Forfour with hybrid and plug-in electric driveline options as part of a broader strategy aimed at lowering Mercedes’ overall fleet CO2 average to below 140g/km by the middle of the decade, in line with EU emissions regulations.

The Forfour would be release sometime in 2014. Watch for it!

More details on the Daimler & Renault-Nissan partnership

770137_1405628_4648_3008_10C415_012 (Custom)
Zetsche sees the latest cooperation agreed upon with Renault-Nissan last week as an important step for the Group on the way to establish a “highly efficient business system.” The agreement covers cooperation in four areas:

- Smart will offer a four-seat model based on a vehicle architecture developed jointly with its partner for the Twingo and the smart, thereby enhancing smart’s position as a young brand offering practical and attractive urban vehicles.
- In addition, new small three and four-cylinder engines will be jointly developed.
- Cooperation will also take place in the area of small commercial vehicles. Mercedes-Benz Vans will supplement its portfolio with a completely new entry-level model.
- And Nissan will be supplied with large Mercedes-Benz gasoline and diesel engines for its luxury brand, Infiniti.

Even though, the partnership didn’t seem to be as deep at first, looking at the above points again makes me thing otherwise. Everything from developing small engines together, to supplying Infiniti (a competitor here in the US) with large diesel and gasoline engines, which might not just stop at sharing 4-cylinder engines, but maybe even move up to the V6 or even V8s from AMG. Let’s wait and see what else they think should be shared.

The Daimler and Renault-Nissan partnership

daimler & renault-nissan

It’s official! Daimler AG and Renault-Nissan has forged an alliance. This was announced yesterday in Brussels, Germany.

The partnership involves further development of the subcompact division that features, the Smart fortwo, Smart forfour and Renault’s Twingo and other electric variants. This will enable the companies to expand the two ranges and utilize their technologies.

The Daimler and Renault-Nissan partnership will also co-develop future powertrains for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Renault-Nissan will adapt their future models to accommodate the new gasoline and diesel engines of Mercedes for their Infiniti models. Mercedes Vito on the other hand will have a diesel engine and a powertrain from Renault-Nissan.

Mercedes and Renault-Nissan will each receive 3.1% of shares from each other. The Mercedes Renault-Nissan partnership will also involve other key aspects of the business.

Mercedes Press Release:

The Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler AG today announced a broad strategic cooperation that will enable both groups to already realize benefits quickly from a range of concrete projects as well as sharing of best practices. The two groups also announced an equity exchange that will give the Renault-Nissan Alliance a 3.1% stake in Daimler and Daimler a 3.1% in Renault and a 3.1% stake in Nissan.

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars said,”Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance are combining common interests to form a promising foundation for a successful, strategically sound cooperation that is based on a number of very concrete and attractive project cooperations. Our skills complement each other very well. Right away, we are strengthening our competitiveness in the small and compact car segment and are reducing our CO2 footprint – both on a long-term basis. We know that we can make brand-typical products based on shared architectures. The individual brand identities will remain unaffected.”

According to Chairman and CEO of Renault-Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, “The Renault-Nissan alliance knows how to work successfully in collaborative partnerships, and this experience is extremely valuable in today’s and even more tomorrow’s global auto industry. This agreement will extend our strategic collaboration and create lasting value for the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler as we work on broadening and strengthening our product offering, efficiently utilizing all available resources and developing the innovative technologies required in the coming decade.”

I personally think that this partnership will surely benefit the three companies. It will make their products more reliable. That is how we consumers want our cars to be made, reliable. Utilizing what they can offer, making the best out of what they already have and developing a more advanced technology for their products. For me, the winners are the consumers and the automotive industry. I say, thanks to the three companies for making that leap and for making the industry flourish.
