GLK Diesel To Be Made Available In The U.S.

2013 glk GLK Diesel To Be Made Available In The U.S.

Acknowledging that diesels are making inroads in terms of acceptability in one of the world’s largest markets, Mercedes-Benz of North America is planning to introduce a diesel GLK, concurrent with its plans to also introduce a diesel-powered C-Class. Today’s crop of diesel engines are far removed from their predecessors, which deserved their reputation as oil burners with their unmistakable clatter. Nowadays, diesel engines rival gasoline engines in terms of smoothness and power generation, while significantly offering higher levels of fuel efficiency with much lower harmful emissions.

For the 2013 model year, Mercedes’ GLK diesel model will sport a 2200 cc common rail engine with an output of 170 hp and almost 300 lb-ft of torque. To be known as the 220 CDI 4Matic, this CUV has already passed US emission laws. With the increased acceptance of diesels, Mercedes-Benz North America head Steve Cannon looks forward to sales figures in the “high 30s”, as opposed to the previous year’s sales of 24,300 units.

Facelifted GLK Caught On Camera

Not unexpectedly, a facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLK has been caught in the wild by spy photogs, with only minimal coverings to its refreshed front and rear ends. As usual, only minor updates will bedeck the facelifted GLK, such as LED running lights and headlights with more angular planes in their execution. With its fairly new design, the GLK doesn’t need a major design upgrade or facelift, in the way its older and bigger G-Class big brother needs one. With the facelifted model running down the road, the photographers were not able to catch any interior upgrades, if any.

Since the company is still mum on updates to this model, there is no official word on drivetrain upgrades. It is not beyond imagining though that Mercedes could possibly offer to GLK buyers its new direct injection V6, displacing 3.5 liters, currently found in the C350.

Renntech and Mercedes Refresh Pikes Peak GLK350

Premier Mercedes-Benz tuner has once again put its radical GLK350 Pikes Peak Rally Car on the road. Initially redisplayed at the Pittsburgh International Auto show two weeks ago, the radical GLK will next stop at Milwaukee, then on to Cincinnati, Cleveland, Kansas City, Minneapolis and Denver. Final stop will be at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Vehicle Museum in Irvine, California.

In its initial appearance in 2008, this GLK had a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 72-volt electric motor providing an additional 26kW to the SUV’s 3.5L V6 engine. There is no indication of a drivetrain upgrade but Renntech and 3M’s Commercial Graphics Division cooperated in refurbishing the GLK with 3M’s 1080 Scotchprint textured automotive vinyl wrap. Preprinted 3.5 mm dual cast film was applied to all exterior surfaces, mixing a carbon fiber and brushed steel appearance. Red striping adds a touch of color to the otherwise matte surface finish.

Says a Renntech press release, “This original body kit was entirely designed and engineered by RENNtech in-house, using the latest in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and rapid prototype capabilities. The concept behind the restyling was to not only completely change the vehicles appearance, but utilize vinyl materials in finishes rarely seen in the automotive world.”

InCar Hotspot Wireless Access Now Includes GLK-Class

Mercedes-Benz has now included in its list of InCar Hotspot-enabled vehicles its GLK-Class SUV. Previously, only the the GL-Class (X164), the M-Class (W164) C-Class (W/S204), the CL-Class (C216), the E-Class (W/S212) and S-Class (W/V221) cars had this unique accessory available. Seven Mercedes-Benz models can now be equipped with wireless net access for people who simply cannot be out of touch from the Internet for long.

As with the kits for the other vehicle models, four devices, such as a laptop, smartphone, iPod touch and any other wireless-enabled device can be accommodated simultaneously. Signals from the network are received by the car’s antenna, which are channeled to a router specifically designed for automotive applications. Paired with a data-enabled SIM card, the system provides a wireless Internet connection inside the moving vehicle. Data transmission standards supported by this system include HSDPA, UMTS and GSM / EDGE. It goes without saying that connectivity and bandwidth are network-dependent variables and may vary from location to location. The retrofit kit for the GLK is part number A204 900 5705 and costs around $1,200 without installation.
