Sponsored Video: BF Goodrich Shows Off Sport Comp 2 Tires in Awesomecross Event

What’s the best way to market new performance sport tires? We don’t really know for sure, but holding a special invite-only event where invitees could take a car out for a spin at night should be high up on the list. That’s exactly what BF Goodrich did with its Awesomecross event held recently, meant to show off the company’s new g-Force Sport COMP-2 summer tires.

Awesomecross is a play on Autocross, events where drivers compete one at a time as they are timed, running through a predetermined course usually in airfields, parking spaces, and other similar paved locations. What makes Awesomecross so awesome? For one, it’s done at night. Add to that the nuances of having to learn the course in the dark and it makes for a really exhilarating race.

The manufacturer wanted to show that the tires perform to make driving more fun. To do this, the organizers have wired the drivers to track their reactions as they drive—something like a test to see the correlation between the new tires and an individual’s driving experience. Judging from the videos, it looks like mission accomplished for BF Goodrich and its marketing team.

12C466 01 597x447 New BharatBenz Plant Inaugurated In IndiaContinuing its assault on all markets, Daimler has announced the completion of a new 700 million Euro manufacturing plant in Chennai, India. Having an initial production capacity of 36,000 units per year with a possibility of ramping up to more than 70,000 units per year depending on demand, the BharatBenz plant is one of only three Daimler truck plants worldwide to combine truck assembly and components production at one location.

Followers of BenzInsider may recall the announcement of the joint heavy-duty truck venture last year. Actual start of production of the BharatBenz heavy-duty trucks are scheduled already for the 3rd quarter of 2012. Speaking in Chennai, Daimler Chairman Dr. Dieter Zetsche, explained, “Our new Oragadam-Chennai plant shares Daimler’s stringent quality standards with its sister plants around the world and is unique at the same time. It is the only Daimler plant in the world that houses products which combine Indian engineering with German and Japanese DNA under a single roof. This way, we are optimally positioning ourselves for one of the world’s strongest and fastest-growing truck markets.”

More diesel engine options for future models

Would you mind switching to diesel? Apparently, luxury car companies don’t mind at all, especially with the big names such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
BMW’s new 3-Series models are now running on diesel, while Mercedes-Benz’s C250 cars now running with an 1800cc turbocharged 4-cylinder under their hoods.
Another model which will soon be sporting a diesel powerplant is the 2013 GLK. Potential owners will have the option to drive with a 2.1-liter turbodiesel engine for the GLK. Future C-Class, E-Class and SLK models may also be given the diesel option, according to Mercedes-Benz SL roadster project manager Gunter Fischer.
Perhaps one of the biggest underlying reasons that the brand is switching to diesels is the high volume of diesel-powered vehicles being sold, roughly 50-percent, in Europe. And of course, there’s the better fuel mileage as compared to gasoline engines.
But would you make the switch? Tell us in your comments.

Open Season For F1 Teams Going Into Shanghai Race

merc schu sepa 2012 1 1024x682 Open Season For F1 Teams Going Into Shanghai Race

At the first 2012 F1 race in Melbourne, seven different teams finished in the top ten places. Two weeks later in Sepang, Malaysia, nine different teams entered the top ten.  Going into the third race this Sunday, there is no firm indication yet of any team having an definitive edge. When a mere second or two differentiates the fastest and slowest car in a field, you can be sure that the teams have their work cut out for them, and that the development engineers back home and those at the track have their hands full looking for that hundredth of a second advantage.

Admits team principal Ross Brawn, “In both races, our problems have been related to getting the tyres into the correct working window. At each race it was at different ends of the scale: in Melbourne, we overheated the tyres – it was under control on Friday, then we developed the set-up in a direction which did not prove helpful in the warmer conditions. In Malaysia, having done a lot of work in practice to make sure we didn’t suffer from the same problem, the cooler conditions on Sunday dropped us out of the window again.” Even so, these disappointments have enable the team to generate data that will help them get more satisfying results as the season progresses. In the meantime, we look forward to the third race of the 2012 F1 season this Sunday.

Seen testing recently at the Nurburgring is the estate version of the groundbreaking CLS design that represented a fresh wave of thinking for Mercedes-Benz. Although it has been called a shooting brake, it strictly is not in the traditional form of the body style that was representative of the shape some decades back.

At any rate, it does conform to the family shape of the CLS as evidenced by the latest set of pictures. By testing it at the Nurburgring, Mercedes is in fact previewing the model to the public. The carmaker would have known that the legions of photographers at the famous track would be sure to take pictures of the pre-production prototype. This latest CLS variant is expected in just a few months, with a range of powertrains ranging from a 200 horsepower diesel to a 400-hp top of the line model.
