Mercedes Pins Hopes On Smaller Cars To Push Sales

Nuova Mercedes ClasseA 2011 big Mercedes Pins Hopes On Smaller Cars To Push Sales

In the struggle for the top metric which is car sales, Mercedes is leaving no stone unturned, as evidenced by its furious pace in developing and bringing new models to market, such as the new SL- and C-Class as well as the newly announced CLC, baby SLS and A-Class.

While Mercedes-Benz USA has managed to stay with Lexus and BMW in the U.S. luxury market, MBUSA management feels that that there are untapped markets that could be satisfied with well-slotted products from the three-pointed star. To this end, it is looking at the smaller cars in Mercedes-Benz’s product line to increase US sales.  Among these are the C-, B- and upcoming A-Class.  The C-Class is expected to get a refresh soon, and will get clean diesel and hybrid variants in the process. Meanwhile, the B-Class may not be as luxurious to some compared to the S-Classes, but for the market that the B-Class is targetted at, the B-Class should be more than enough. But perhaps the most important model will be the A-Class, which MBUSA executives initially weren’t keen on. But after seeing the reception to the car in various events, MBUSA management was convinced that this relatively diminutive car could make a big impact.

Far from being a static buck, denizens of the UK will get to see the A-Class Concept car, which was presented to the world with rave reviews. Starting at the Bullring Shopping Centre in Birmingham, the A-Class concept will then continue its UK national tour with stops at Westfield in London, the Arndale Shopping Centre in Manchester then on to Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow.

Gary Savage, Managing Director for Mercedes-Benz Cars in the UK said that, “Both visually and technologically, Concept A-Class provides an exciting insight into the potential future of the Mercedes-Benz compact car range, and a tantalizing glimpse of some of the features that we’re confident would influence future customers in this highly-competitive sector.”

The shopping mall locations are the places where Mercedes feels a compact car with luxury features will make a strong connection with the market the carmaker is after.

New Mercedes-Benz A-Class Coming Soon

Enough with the prototypes and start getting thrilled for the real thing.

Surely, you are already excited about how the new A-Class looks like. Fret no more, because Mercedes-Benz confirmed that the new vehicle will be released by at the end of 2012.

The new car will have front-wheel drive and is based on the new platform, the Mercedes-front-drive architecture or the MFA. This platform will be first used by the new B-Class which is slated to be released in November and unveiled earlier on September 2011 at the IAA.

Although the new A-Class in production will be patterned after the Concept A-Class, it is not the exact one as the tail lights will be a bit smaller than the ones in the drawings. The engine is an OM651 with 6-speed manual transmission. It will also be available in automatic, with 7 -speed.

Baby Benzes Set To Conquer The World

Scheduled for production in 2013, Mercedes-Benz will be introducing the latest generation A- and B-class models. In the case of the A-Class, the new generation will see no less than seven body variations, which will be made available in all major markets, including the U.S.

The A-Class platform will also serve the B-Class, which will see a crossover competitor aimed at BMW’s X1. Additionally, there will be CLC-class variants that will be in similar in size to Toyota’s diminutive Corolla.

But before you think that Mercedes-Benz is moving downmarket, these German- and Hungarian-built baby Benzes will be considerably larger than the models that they will replace. Whereas the current A-class is slightly shorter than a Mini Cooper, the upcoming A-Class will actually be almost 2 feet longer than the Mini. And if the 2-door A-Class concept shown at the NY Auto Show is any indication, the interior will be anything but drab.

Four powertrain types will be available for these upcoming models, from a gasoline/electric hybrid, to fuel-cell variants, a few diesels and on to a 340 hp biturbo four cylinder AMG variant. Drive will be front- or all-wheel drive, depending on the powerplant. Expectedly, we will find Mercedes’ 7-speed automatics, but stick shifters can opt for an equally excellent 6-speed manual.

By the looks of it, Mercedes is covering all its bases in this segment, and has even announced that if the European plants fall short of demand, the company has its China plants to make up the shortfall.

For years, Daimler has been known to use natural fibers such as hemp, sisal, flax and coconut to Mercedes-Benz cars’ interior. Now, the company is taking the use of natural fiber to the next level, using it for car exterior.

The underbody protection will now be abaca fibers as opposed to the usual glass fibers. The first model to experience the development of this is the Mercedes-Benz A-Klasse.

A Philippines producer, Manila Cordage, will supply the company with these fibers coming from the musa textilis plant, a plant within the same family as banana. Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Rieter will have the components manufactured.

“We are the only automobile manufacturer to use natural fibers in the exterior of a vehicle, with the cover for the spare-wheel compartment of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. We are therefore making full use of this material’s potential and contributing to the success of the abaca project, which we are supporting in the Philippines,” said Herbert Kohler.

The company further explains that by using abaca fibers, they will be able to save up to 60% of energy, that is in comparison with producing glass fibers thus decreasing carbon dioxide emissions. Aside from that the left over materials can be used as fertilizers.
