It’s Official: New Mercedes-Benz G-Class

New-Gen Mercedes-Benz G-Class
It has been the definitive cross-country vehicle since 1979. It has won the Paris-Dakar Rally, is deemed a worthy means of transport for the Pope, ranks as an automotive design icon, is a serial winner of readers’ polls and constitutes the gene pool for a Mercedes-Benz SUV family that now numbers four model series in all. It is, of course – the G-Class.

It has been in production for 29 years now, making the G-Class by far the longest-serving passenger car model series there has been since Mercedes-Benz came into existence in 1886. And its haul of superlatives is set to grow still further, because the G-Class is subject to continual updating that keeps it in touch with the very latest motoring technology. This time, once again, the exterior has only been modernized to a limited degree quite deliberately. The advances mainly center on the vehicle’s telematics, along with the new 5.5-litre V8 engine that is available for the G 500.

TV Commercial: BMW sticking it to Mercedes

The Mercedes vs. BMW debate/war is a lot more prominent in Germany and other European cities than it is in the States. Over the years and decades, the rivalry has not only sharpened between their respective fans, but also between the two companies. BMW has started airing a pretty funny commercial on German TV, mocking the Mercedes stereotype of being – boring. I’ve got to say, the BMW advertising department did a superb job with this TV commercial.

The woman in the commercial says – “Make a wish!”

The S-Class achieved 950 points in the Strategic Vsion’s Luxury Car segment, making it the single automobile that owners are most satisfied with following their purchase. This isn’t really a surprise for us or anyone that has driven the S-Class, but nevertheless, having some real-world data and awards proves our point.

Mercedes’ plans on Romanian plant

piccs Mercedes plans on Romanian plant
Mercedes-Benz currently has 17 production plants across the world and 18th one isn’t too far away. Eastern Europe looks is the next target for Mercedes-Benz as it is finalizes plans of setting up a plant in that region. Reports from Automotive News suggest that the western Romanian county of Timis is the shortlisted area where the plant will be constructed.

It is also predicted that Mercedes will concentrate building and selling the low-end models, A and B-Class cars initially as they make more sense than luxury sedans and SUV’s in a developing region.

The final call according to a county authority, will be made within three weeks. Speculations made by the local media earlier this year suggested that the plant would be located in the northwest county of Cluj. Interestingly Cluj is the same place where Nokia is establishing its facilities presently.

Daimler’s CEO Dieter Zetsche told a German newspaper earlier this month that the company would probably decide in the second quarter where to build a new plant for Mercedes compact cars, with a site in eastern Europe being the most favorable spot.

Looks like Mercedes seldom make poor decisions. Setting up a plant in Romania would be profitable in the long run as the small cars can be distributed to all parts of Europe. Renault did it with the Logan, and that proves that Romania is friendly to cars which appeal to the cost conscious customer.

Introducing the new-generation B-Class

new gen mercedes benz b class05 535x356 Introducing the new generation B Class
A day after my encounter with a B-Class in the States, Mercedes is introducing a new generation of the B-Class. After three successful years, Mercedes has overhauled the design and engineering of the B-Class. The facelift program focused on environmental compatibility, economic efficiency and comfort, with further advances being made in each of these areas. Thanks to a series of detailed improvements, the four-cylinder engines now burn up to 7% less fuel than previously, and distinguish themselves with remarkably low exhaust emissions that undercut the current EU limits by as much as 90%.

Mercedes-Benz has developed a new ECO start/stop function for the high-volume B 150 and B 170 models. This switches off the engine when stopped at traffic lights, for example, producing a fuel saving of up to nine percent in practical use. Additional new developments include the bi-fuel petrol/natural-gas drive in the B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY, along with active parking assist which helps drivers to both find a suitable parking spot, and then maneuver into it.
