Stuttgart Stadium soon to be Mercedes Benz Arena

stuttgart_stadium_vfb_gottlieb_daimler.jpg
Stuttgart’s Gottlieb Daimler Stadium is one of few in Germany that is currently not bearing the name of a corporation. This will change on July 30th, when a friendly with Arsenal London will inaugurate the new Mercedes Benz Arena. The deal will guarantee Mercedes a 30 year leas on the stadium name for about 20 million Euros.

The stadium was renovated recently in preperation for the 2006 World Cup, but there are currently plans to demolish it and build a brand new 60,000-seater in 2009 – this time without an athletics track. The new, yet to be approved by local authorities, stadium would cost 93 million Euros and be completed in 2011.

Mercedes Heritage: Four-cylinder engines from Mercedes-Benz

mercedes-heritage-4-cylinder-engine.jpg
What do four-valve technology, supercharging, common rail technology and CGI direct gasoline injection have in common? Answer: They all celebrated their Mercedes-Benz premieres in four-cylinder engines. Throughout the history of the brand from Stuttgart, this seemingly unspectacular engine type has always been at the cutting edge of outstanding innovation. Even the DIESOTTO technology, which was premiered in the F 700 research car at the 2007 International Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), was first introduced by Mercedes-Benz in a four-cylinder engine.

Along with many other factors, the number of cylinders an engine has is indicative both of driving culture and prestige. The greater the number of cylinders, the better the ride quality – it is a rule of thumb followed by almost all markets worldwide. Mercedes-Benz Cars enjoys a reputation for supplying passenger cars equipped with a diversified range of superb internal combustion engines. The smart has three cylinders, the S-Class twelve, and between the two extremes there exists an entire spectrum of other configurations. While the four-cylinder versions may seem rather unspectacular at first sight, these are the very engines to which great importance is attached time and again.

Mercedes-Benz Partners with Exclusive Online Community

mercedes-asmallworld-partne.jpg
We have seen time and time again that Mercedes is open to new ideas and to new ways of reach their fans and customers. Their newest venture is a partnership with the exclusive online community ‘ASmallWorld‘, which will not online give them the opportunity to directly target consumers, but also to interact with them and gain insight on what their customer wants. ASmallWorld’s invite only social network has over 300,000 members from more than 200 countries.

The partnership will consist of an automotive forum for the members, blogs for prominent personalities, as well as an event calender and ASW’s Internet TV. While Mercedes has plenty of forums and blogs as well as their own internet TV site, this partnership will enable them to involve a community and give them a one-stop-shop site. The one thing that I don’t particularly understand or agree with is their website choice. There are plenty of networking sites out there that not only have a bigger audience but also the ability for you to sign-up and not wait for someone to send you an invite. Good intentions – bad execution!

Diesel initiative in the US: BlueTEC SUVs in all 50 US states

mercedes-benz-bluetec-g-320-ml-320-r-320.JPG
Mercedes Benz has finally won approval to license BlueTEC SUVs in all 50 states. They will shortly start selling the ML 320, R 320, and GL 320 BlueTEC in all US states, and feature the worlds cleanest diesel technology available.

The vehicles, which will first be available in the US, will comply with the extremely strict requirements of the American Bin 5 and ULEV emission standards. This will make Mercedes-Benz the first manufacturer to be able to license diesel SUVs in all 50 US states.

The public is still not aware on how this technology works, so we’ll try to explain. The second BlueTEC version, used in the new GL 320 BlueTEC, ML 320 BlueTEC and R 320 BlueTEC models, makes use of AdBlue, a harmless aqueous urea solution, that is injected into the exhaust-gas stream. This process releases ammonia, which converts up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water by a process of reduction in the downstream SCR catalytic converter.

Mercedes-Benz developing 100% electric car

s-class-electric-vehicle-medium.jpg
We have recently learned, from a source close to Mercedes Benz and its Research Center in Stuttgart, that the Daimler AG is working on a vehicle “which will revolutionize the luxury auto market,” as they put it. The “revolutionary” vehicle will be an all electric mid-size to large luxury vehicle, and will feature a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged two ways. The first option will be with a direct plug-in, and the other option will be a small dynamo like device that will charge the battery while the car is driving. In current tests, the battery was able to get 170 km (approx 105 miles) before it had to be charged again, which means that the dynamo itself can only partially recharge the battery.

Formula 1 Grand Prix in Australia

mercedes-mclaren-f1-hamilton-medium.jpg
The F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne this Sunday, will certainly go down in the history books as one of the craziest races ever, right next to the Michelin disaster of June 2005 in Indianapolis, when only 6 drivers were able to race. Melbourn had no tire issues, but a whole bunch of accidents, motor and transmission problems, which after 58 laps had only 6 drivers finish the race. Rubens Barrichello, who finished 6th, was disqualified for driving through a red light in the pit stop. At the end, there were only 5 legitimate drivers who scored points by finishing the entire race. Kazu Nakajima, Sebastien Bourdais, and Kimi Raikonen scored points at the end of the day, even though, they retired a couple of laps before the race was over.

Our man Hamilton finished first in Melbourne, beating Heidfeld and Rosberg by 5.4 sec and 8.1 sec respectively. His next challenge will be in a week at the Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
