After months of speculations, and dozen of spy shots/video, Mercedes has finally revealed the C-Class Estate. They sure did let us wait with the Estate, as the sedan was released in March and the AMG version a couple of months ago. The car is absolutely beautiful, especially when you look at it from the side. The front is just like the sedan version; the back is always the most interesting part of an Estate and probably the most difficult to design. You can see it yourself, they were able to pull it off and make it almost identical to the sedan version in term of the tail lights. Overall, in my opinion, they did a great job – as always.

An engine that is not running does not need any fuel. This truism helps the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to save fuel and thereby reduce its environmental impact. If the vehicle is stationary with the engine idling and the transmission in neutral for more than three seconds, the engine is automatically switched off. As soon as the driver depresses the clutch pedal again, the engine re-starts. The potential for saving fuel is considerable: in some cases, depending on application and traffic density, drivers managed to cut their fuel consumption by as much as 20%. On average, the amount saved will probably be somewhere between five and eight percent. The system performs to best advantage in urban use involving frequent stops in traffic queues or at traffic lights.
This technology or system definitely sounds like something every future car will have. I mean if are not driving, then your car doesn’t need to be on. There are many traffic lights that keep you waiting for a couple of minute, even though to it seems more like an eternity, and turning your car then is a great way to save on gas.
When driving a new S-Class, you are guaranteed to draw the attention of both men and women alike. When driving an S-Class in Latvia, and you are somehow associated with a certain mafia group, it may get you killed. As you can see, this fella got the attention of the wrong people, ending with a blown up S-Class. Well, that’s what you get when you mess with the wrong people.
The famous F1 or SLR lookalike nose has finally justified its appearance. Well, it could be a potential überflieger, a car that Porsche drivers won’t make happy at all.
After shifting the CLK63 AMG into overdrive with the Black Series treatment, Mercedes is repeating the process, this time with the SLK55 AMG. Thanks to a massaged 5.5-liter V-8 that now makes 400 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque — up 40 and 7, respectively — and lightweight components that shave 99 pounds off the car’s weight, the SLK55 AMG Black Series goes 0-62 in 4.5 seconds — 0.4 second quicker than the regular SLK 55 — with a top speed of 173 mph.
The numbers for the 2nd quarter have come out, and even though they seem high, they fall short of what DCX earned last year. DaimlerChrysler achieved EBIT (Earnings before Interest & Taxes) of €2,134 million in the second quarter, which is less than in Q2 of 2006: €2,374 million. The earnings trend was positively affected primarily by the Mercedes Car Group, which once again achieved a strong increase in its operating results, mainly due to quality and efficiency improvements, and a positive development of its sales structure.
The Mercedes Car Group achieved EBIT of €1,204 million in the quarter under review, a significant increase compared to the second quarter of last year (€690 million). The MB Group did sell less cars, 320,200 vehicles in the second quarter of 2007 (Q2 2006: 325,500), but they still managed to increased their earnings, due to revamping their cost structure.
Another great reason why the slit was good move, by just looking at some of the numbers here. The full and official press release is after the break.
DaimlerChrysler (stock-exchange abbreviation DAI) today decided on a share buyback program. In exercise of the authorization granted by the Annual Meeting of April 4, 2007, the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board approved a program for the company to acquire its own shares.
This is a logical step to take in view of the high net liquidity in the industrial business as well as the good prospects for earnings and cash flows in all divisions. Following the structural and strategic realignment of the core business, this decision will also optimize the company’s capital structure and make it more efficient.
The share buyback program will be executed through the stock exchange. Nearly 10% of the outstanding shares will be acquired for an amount of up to €7.5 billion in exercise of the authorization granted by the Annual Meeting of April 4, 2007. This will fully utilize the volume authorized by the Annual Meeting. By the end of this year, treasury shares are to be acquired in a volume of approximately €3.5 billion. By the end of August 2008, the acquisition of additional shares in a volume of up to approximately €4 billion is planned, provided that the earnings situation is in line with expectations for full-year 2007. The period of the buyback program is limited until the end of August 2008.

This was another great F1 race on Sunday, unfortunately not a good outcome for the silver arrows, finishing on third and fifth place. The Scuderia team took places one and two right at the beginning and never really looked back at the trailing Hamilton, which ended up on fifth place after an incident with his tire, but fortunately Alonso was able to capture that last podium place with a bit of skill and a lot of luck.
The start: For the fifth time this year, Lewis and Fernando had qualified second and fourth respectively. At the start, Lewis dropped to third behind the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Rà¤ikkà¶nen whilst Fernando was sixth at the end of the opening lap.
The race: Fernando got stuck behind Nick Heidfeld (BMW Sauber). When Heidfeld’s team mate Robert Kubica pitted on lap 12 Fernando improved to fifth. On lap 17, also Heidfeld came in and Fernando was fourth.
Fernando made his first routine stop on lap 18 (9.1sec) together with Rà¤ikkà¶nen, whilst Massa came in on lap 19 and Lewis on lap 20 (9.4sec). After that, Massa went back into the lead ahead of Rà¤ikkà¶nen and Lewis; Fernando passed both BMW Saubers during his pitstop and was fourth.
Mercedes-Benz’s director of corporate communications, Geoff Day, announced a great event for the upcoming Frankfurt auto show: Mercedes-Benz will be introducing 19 cars in 15 minutes.
These won’t all be new cars, with probably a mix of concepts and updates, but Mercedes-Benz intends to make a big splash this year. We expect to see some sort of hybrid in the mix, although we couldn’t pin him down on the details. The most firm information we got was the previously leaked F700 concept, rumored to be a big luxury car, which will feature the DiesOtto engine.
