Writing in Auto Week, British automotive journalist Tony Lewin reports that Thomas Weber, head of R&D at DaimlerChrysler, has announced that Mercedes-Benz Car Group will launch stop-start technology across its entire line-up, beginning with the A and B Class ranges in September.

Sources quoted indicate that Valeo will supply its StARS belt-driven stop-start system for the A and B class models, as already adopted for the new smart fortwo city car and some of Citroà«n’s C2 and C3 hatchbacks.

Mr Weber reportedly said Mercedes would use a different solution for its larger, rear-drive models. A Mercedes official who did not wish to be named said that for these models, the company will use a so-called ‘ISG’ flywheel starter/alternator system from an unnamed supplier, which can reduce engine vibration and provide fill-in torque to smooth gearshifts.

Mercedes-Benz announced earlier this week the ‘mid-term’ launch of a new proprietary ‘DiesOtto’ spark-cum-auto combustion process for future, hybrid-assisted petrol engines.

New C Class – bullet riddled

I got a very interesting email today from Danny with some cool pictures of a bullet riddled C-Class. It turns out that the new W204 C-Class is staring in a new movie called “State of the Nation II” being filmed in London. The vehicles have Mercedes-Benz registration plates, which is a hint that it may be a product placement of the new C-Class for the movie. While I have never heard of State of the Nation One, I am excited to see the scene where the Mercedes gets shot up. It is nice to see Mercedes continue to embrace product placements, as they have done in the past with “The Devil wears Prada” and “Man in Black II”. Audi has also been heavily investing, with the “I Robot” recently and now news is emerging that the new R8 will be the car of the “Iron Man”.

Update: I was informed by Danny that the mentioned film title may only be a cover title. He tells me that it looks like a high bugdet film, one hint would of course be the use of the W204. The film crew at the set was not willing to reveal any information when asked. We’ll keep you posted!

WorldCarFans have obtained an uncovered shot of the upcoming C-Class wagon. Just like they point out, it is the first time we see it with no masking tape on it. The wagon should make its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show, which BenzInsider will attend live if everything works out the way we hope. WCF is reporting that customers with have the option between the four-cylinder C180 (156 bhp, compressor) or C200 (184 bhp, compressor) and the six-cylinder C230 (204 bhp), C280 (231 bhp) or C350 (272 bhp). Diesel enthusiasts might prefer the C200 CDI (136 bhp), C220 CDI (170 bhp) or C320 (V6, 224 bhp).

100th vehicle donation to promote Olympic sports worldwide
As part of the Olympic Solidarity program, DaimlerChrysler handed over a Mercedes Benz Sprinter to the National Olympic Committee of Vietnam. The vehicle was jointly presented by Wilfried Porth, Director of the Van Business Unit at DaimlerChrysler and Ser Miang Ng, member of the IOC, to the Vietnam Olympic Committee, represented by its president, Nguyen Danh Thai. It is the one-hundredth minibus that DaimlerChrysler has provided to a National Olympic Committee. With the most recent donation, the NOC of Vietnam is the only National Olympic Committee which has received a second vehicle. Just like the first van which was handed over exactly 10 years ago, the new vehicle will also be used to carry young Vietnamese athletes to training sessions and competitions.
