Mercedes-Benz To Launch Stop-Start Technology Across Car Range

Writing in Auto Week, British automotive journalist Tony Lewin reports that Thomas Weber, head of R&D at DaimlerChrysler, has announced that Mercedes-Benz Car Group will launch stop-start technology across its entire line-up, beginning with the A and B Class ranges in September.

Sources quoted indicate that Valeo will supply its StARS belt-driven stop-start system for the A and B class models, as already adopted for the new smart fortwo city car and some of Citroà«n’s C2 and C3 hatchbacks.

Mr Weber reportedly said Mercedes would use a different solution for its larger, rear-drive models. A Mercedes official who did not wish to be named said that for these models, the company will use a so-called ‘ISG’ flywheel starter/alternator system from an unnamed supplier, which can reduce engine vibration and provide fill-in torque to smooth gearshifts.

Mercedes-Benz announced earlier this week the ‘mid-term’ launch of a new proprietary ‘DiesOtto’ spark-cum-auto combustion process for future, hybrid-assisted petrol engines.

New C Class – bullet riddled

932041471_c3a67b03bc_b.gif
I got a very interesting email today from Danny with some cool pictures of a bullet riddled C-Class. It turns out that the new W204 C-Class is staring in a new movie called “State of the Nation II” being filmed in London. The vehicles have Mercedes-Benz registration plates, which is a hint that it may be a product placement of the new C-Class for the movie. While I have never heard of State of the Nation One, I am excited to see the scene where the Mercedes gets shot up. It is nice to see Mercedes continue to embrace product placements, as they have done in the past with “The Devil wears Prada” and “Man in Black II”. Audi has also been heavily investing, with the “I Robot” recently and now news is emerging that the new R8 will be the car of the “Iron Man”.

Update: I was informed by Danny that the mentioned film title may only be a cover title. He tells me that it looks like a high bugdet film, one hint would of course be the use of the W204. The film crew at the set was not willing to reveal any information when asked. We’ll keep you posted!

WorldCarFans have obtained an uncovered shot of the upcoming C-Class wagon. Just like they point out, it is the first time we see it with no masking tape on it. The wagon should make its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show, which BenzInsider will attend live if everything works out the way we hope. WCF is reporting that customers with have the option between the four-cylinder C180 (156 bhp, compressor) or C200 (184 bhp, compressor) and the six-cylinder C230 (204 bhp), C280 (231 bhp) or C350 (272 bhp). Diesel enthusiasts might prefer the C200 CDI (136 bhp), C220 CDI (170 bhp) or C320 (V6, 224 bhp).

vietnam-olympic-small.JPG
As part of the Olympic Solidarity program, DaimlerChrysler handed over a Mercedes Benz Sprinter to the National Olympic Committee of Vietnam. The vehicle was jointly presented by Wilfried Porth, Director of the Van Business Unit at DaimlerChrysler and Ser Miang Ng, member of the IOC, to the Vietnam Olympic Committee, represented by its president, Nguyen Danh Thai. It is the one-hundredth minibus that DaimlerChrysler has provided to a National Olympic Committee. With the most recent donation, the NOC of Vietnam is the only National Olympic Committee which has received a second vehicle. Just like the first van which was handed over exactly 10 years ago, the new vehicle will also be used to carry young Vietnamese athletes to training sessions and competitions.

Mercedes-Benz Presents “DiesOtto” – Petrol Engine With Diesel Genes

E320 CDi Diesel Engine

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it has combined all the advantages of both petrol and diesel engines in its “DiesOtto” powertrain. Its potential is indicated by the prospect of a mild-hybrid-assisted 1.8-litre engine giving 47 mpg in a future S Class-size car. The new technology includes features such as direct gasoline injection, turbocharging and variable compression, but at the core of the innovation lies controlled auto ignition, a combustion process similar to that of a diesel. The Mercedes system can be operated using conventional gasoline.

Following Mercedes’ launch of the E300 BLUETEC Euro 5-rated diesel engine, already on the U.S. market and due in Europe from the end of this year, Prof. Dr. Herbert Kohler, Head of Group Research & Advanced Engineering Vehicle and Powertrain and Chief Environmental Officer of DaimlerChrysler says: “Our next goal will now be to make the gasoline engine as economical as a diesel. All the preconditions for this are provided by our DiesOtto concept, which incorporates the foremost strengths of both the gasoline engine and diesel engine.”

The first DiesOtto engine described in Mercedes’ release is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder unit with an output of 175 kW/238 hp and a maximum torque of 400 newton metres, and fuel consumption, with the accompaniment of a mild hybrid starter-alternator, of under 6 litres per 100 kilometres (47 mpg) in a car the size of the current S-Class.

Its key technological features are:

- Downsizing with fewer cylinders and a smaller displacement ~

-Turbocharging for superior performance

- Direct gasoline injection as a further fuel economy measure

- Controlled auto ignition, a combustion process similar to that of a diesel

- Variable valve control

- A variable compression ratio leading to even better fuel economy and, depending on customer needs and the type of operation,

- A hybrid module with an integrated starter/generator, which makes the drive unit even more economical.

Wow, maybe we can expect gasoline prices to go down… Sometime in a future.

F1: Hamilton Will Race After Crash

Hamilton at the press conference

LEWIS Hamilton will drive in today’s European Grand Prix in Germany.
The 22-year-old Tewin talent has been given the all clear by doctors to race after his 150mph (241km/h) crash at the Nürburgring yesterday afternoon during the final session of qualifying.
In a statement released this morning, McLaren confirmed that the world championship leader from Herts would get behind the wheel.
It said: “Vodafone McLaren Mercedes are pleased to confirm that Lewis Hamilton has been cleared to race in today’s European Grand Prix by the FIA medical delegate Dr Gary Hartstein and the chief medical officer of the event, Dr Klaus U Zerbian. “The entire team looks forward to enjoying a competitive race this afternoon for both Fernando (Alonso) and Lewis.”
The front right tyre on Hamilton’s McLaren burst as he exited turn eight yesterday and he careered off the track at high speed with just five minutes of the qualifying session left. Hamilton was on a hot lap at the time and was challenging for pole position. He will now start from 10th on the gird with the same fuel load as he started qualifying with. The qualifying session was red flagged after Hamilton’s accident and continued after half an hour delay.

I believe, he can finish on the podium today.

Lewis Hamilton Escapes Injury in High-speed Crash

.The wreckage of Hamilton's McLaren

Lewis Hamilton has escaped injury after a high-speed crash during the final qualifying session at the Nurburgring. The rookie was halfway through a rapid first flying lap on new tyres when his McLaren’s right-front wheel exploded on the 150mph turn-in to the Michael Schumacher S-bend. After ploughing into the tyre barrier at what seemed almost unabated speed, Hamilton took some time to get out of the cockpit, raising concerns that he may have injured his foot or leg. He gave a thumbs-up as he was taken by ambulance to the circuit medical centre
