Car2go suspends service in Miami

Daimler’s ride-sharing service car2go is suspending its service in Miami effective March 1, citing ‘soft demand’ in the area. That is despite some 32,000 individuals who have signed up for the service, which is backed by 300 smart vehicles for the Miami fleet. According to a company spokesperson, the $1 charge applied by the state for rental-car services is stifling car2go’s prospects. This is especially true because other ride-sharing platforms–such as Uber–as well as taxis are not subject to that same charge. $1 may not seem like much, but people who get used to ride-sharing services will depend on those services, and people will be discouraged by a constant $1 charge… Continue Reading »

Daimler, Bosch, Car2go Partner for Auto-Parking Tech

Daimler is looking to roll out cars with automated parking features before the mass production of self-driving cars. According to the media site of Mercedes’ parent company, it just forged a partnership with Bosch to start a pilot project about cars that will be able to park themselves simply through a command from the user’s smartphone. Mercedes-Benz B-Class to banner new car2go Black service

Have you ever wanted to try Daimler’s car2go point-to-point car-sharing service, but were held back by the fact that your car is a smart fortwo? Don’t look now, but the company is launching a new spinoff service dubbed as ‘car2go Black’, which features Mercedes-Benz B-Class diesel units for members’ traveling convenience. The B-Class will be available as an option for members in Berlin and Hamburg, initially. Each city will get an allocation of 100 units in what is presumably a pilot of a program that will be rolled out across the other car2go locations around the world. Car2go completes year one in Seattle

Daimler’s carsharing service car2go, powered by smart vehicles, just celebrated its first year in Seattle. The service operates 500 smart fortwo units in the area, and it is already the largest as well as the fastest-growing car2go city in the US. Launched in December 2012, car2go Seattle now has over 40,000 people registered to the service who share the 500 fortwo vehicles as they go from point to point within the city. Of the 500, 170 were added in the previous year in order to keep up with the growing demand as well as the increase in driver registrations. This month marks another milestone in Daimler’s car2go car-sharing service, as Milan gets to enjoy a fleet of 450 smart fortwo vehicles slated to be fully available by the middle of September. While the smart eco-friendly vehicle brand certainly isn’t the biggest moneymaker in the Daimler stable, those vehicles together with the car2go platform allows the German automaker to make good on its promise of delivering sustainable automotive solutions, particularly for urban mobility applications that are focused upon by car2go. It seems there’s no stopping car2go’s expansion, especially across North America. The city of Denver, Colorado is set to launch its own car2go carsharing service on June 8, making it the tenth city in America with said service. The launch network in Denver will come with 300 units of the car2go edition smart fortwo, and will be available for rental across the 42-square-mile Denver Home Area. London car2go to Expand Business Area in June

Car-sharing service car2go is set to expand its London business area come June, with the  new business area covering 100 square miles to take effect in a few days. The London car2go service launched in December of last year, in Islington as well as Sutton. The service has expanded from the initial two boroughs to include large areas. There’s Croydon, Kingston, Raynes Park, Richmond, South Lambeth, Southwark, and Wimbledon.
