B-Class Plugin Hybrid Slated For The U.S. Market

Acknowledging the whims of the North American market, Mercedes is reportedly considering the development of a B-Class plug-in hybrid. This should not be a surprise since Mercedes has been saying all along that hybrids are a class of drivetrains that will be part of their offerings. As the smallest Mercedes available in the U.S. market, the B-Class will be another component of their war against their German rivals.

But as other variants of the B-Class have shown, this small Mercedes is by no means an entry-level vehicle. Interior appointments and safety features are at par with those of the C- and even E-Class. With the introduction of a plug-in hybrid, MBNA is giving buyers in one of its largest markets even more choices and options to get into these superbly engineered cars.

We have every confidence that they will continue to build on the success of their predecessors and help generate further momentum in terms of sales.”

The new B-Class: premium is not a matter of size

Since 2005 more than 700,000 customers have taken delivery of a B-Class. With about a third of worldwide sales since the beginning of the year having been made in Germany, this represents its biggest market, followed by China, where the B-Class was introduced with great success in 2009.

The new M-Class: improved efficiency and an exceptional level of safety

With altogether more than 1.2 million units sold, the M-Class is the most successful SUV in its segment. Since its market launch in 2005, more than half a million customers have opted for the most recent model generation and, in spite of a model change being imminent, sales in October increased by 22.2% percent, making the
M-Class leader in its market segment. The biggest sales market is the US, with a share of approx. 40 percent since the start of 2011, followed by China and Germany.

One of the most impressive features of this third generation of the Mercedes-Benz
M-Class is its outstanding energy efficiency. The fuel consumption of the new models lies, on average, 25 percent below that of their predecessors. The fuel-efficiency champion is the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC, which gets by with an NEDC consumption of just 6.0 l/100 km (158 g CO2/km).

Further strengths of the premium SUV with permanent all-wheel drive include exceptional safety and well-balanced ride comfort as well as excellent driving dynamics both on and off the road. What is more, the ML features an array of new chassis developments and innovative dynamic handling control systems which further enhance both driving enjoyment and handling safety.

B-Class AMG Shows Variant-Specific Details

200912717120 B Class AMG Shows Variant Specific Details

Already hinted at and widely expecteed, the B-Class AMG has finally been seen in the wild.  As befits, and typical of, an AMG high performance variant, the B-Class AMG features a revised snout with bigger intakes plus a rear fascia with twin exhausts. Being an AMG model, these exterior revisions are definitely not for display only as the rumor is that this hot B-Class will be powered by a 2-liter turbocharged four with an output between 320 and 360 horsepower. As with most other high performance models in the market today, a dual-clutch transmission will transfer power to the driven wheels. All-wheel drive is a very real possibility.

We can also expect revised suspension settings that will favor handling, as well as uprated brakes. AMG-specific wheel and tire combos will add a unique look as well as sharper cornering. With these modifications, the B-Class should become a worthy competitor to the Audi RS3.

B-Class E-Cell Becomes A Practical Daily Driver

Expectedly, German automakers like Mercedes will use the Frankfurt Auto Show to present and announce their upcoming products and technologies that are in the pipeline. One of these is a B-Class vehicle that’s been converted into an E-Cell, which is Mercedes-speak for an EV. But this B-Class E-Cell is unique in that it’s been fitted with a range-extending internal combustion engine that will allow the vehicle to recharge its batteries when they run out.

Prime motivation for this electric B-Class is a 100 kilowatt electric motor getting its juice from a lithium ion array. With this arrangement, range is limited to 100 kilometers but by using the 1000cc turbo engine, range is extended to 600 km.

This kind of range makes it eminently practical as a car that’s not limited by range. In addition, the B-Class E-Cell features a raft of safety features like Attention Assist, Blind Spot and Lane Keep Assist, Active Parking Assist, Speed Limit Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Brake Hold and Hill Hold functions, a reversing camera as well as other passive safety systems.

New B-Class Video Shows Stately Progression

Claiming that “No model change in the history of Mercedes-Benz has ever seen so many new developments introduced in one fell swoop”, Thomas Weber, Head of Development for Mercedes-Benz cars enthused about the safety features of the newly-launched B-Class. Though not as exciting to watch as the AMG stormers like the Black Series or SLS AMG, this footage of the new B-Class shows the packaging of the safety features that were of primary importance in the design of the vehicle.

What you see from the outside are the sleeker lines and distinctly Mercedes-Benz aura of the B-Class as it moves down the road. What is not immediately noticeable is the radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist and the PRE-SAFE preventive occupant protection system, both of which are standard and new to this vehicle segment.

The new model also features direct injection and turbocharging, new diesel engine, dual clutch transmission, manual transmission and driver assist systems. The standard gas engine is a 1600 cc unit with 120 horsepower. Buyers can also opt for a larger displacement B200 with 156 horsepower. Diesel engines come with 110 horsepower in the B180 CDI and 136 hp in the B200 CDI.
