Mercedes-Benz has just launched the diesel variant of the B-Class hatchback in India, in a bid to further bolster its compact-car range in an important market. With some 500 units of the petrol variant sold in the nine months since it was launched, the German automaker is expecting the diesel B-Class to perform better as far as sales figures go. With the sales of Mercedes-Benz India looking great, the brand is releasing two variants in the territory on May 30. The new car will be under the A-Class and B-Class category. Based on a report by the Indian auto news site called Car Dekho, buyers of the new A-Class premium hatchback will have two engine options to choose from. One will have a 1.6-liter petrol and the other will be equipped with a 1.8-liter turbo diesel engine. Then, it will have a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. On the other hand, the new B-Class will only be available in a 1.8-liter turbo diesel engine.
The Indian market will see the entry of three new Mercedes-Benz models within the next few months. The latest news coming out of Mercedes is that the B-Class Electric Drive will be made available to the North American market before its sees dealer showrooms in Europe. Slated to be released in 2014, this variant will be classified as the W242, as opposed to W246 from which it was originally derived. The latest prototypes have been observed with revised front spoilers and side skirts, compared to what was presented at the 2012 Paris launch. Seen recently on the Mercedes stand at the 2012 Paris Motor Show was the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric drive. This pure electric car is powered by a lithium-ion battery co-developed with Tesla. Range is touted to be 125 miles, with a top speed of 93 mph. Apparently, the Electric Drive will be the only version of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class that will be made available in America.
