Daimler’s brainchild, Mercedes-Benz, is continuing the adoption of SMSC’s Media Oriented Systems Transport networking technology for the latest generation of the M-Class. This particular tech is, according to a press release from the company, “the accepted standard for high bandwidth infotainment networking in the car.”

The tech was introduced in the first generation of the M-Class. Now on its second round, it comes with an entirely new set of infotainment features in the new M-Class, namely a dominant instrument panel with a large color screen for infotainment, navigation and communication. The MOST system will be in charge of connecting different kinds of infotainment devices in the M-Class.

“We are pleased to continue to be selected by Daimler as the in-vehicle networking system of choice for this prestigious Mercedes-Benz model,” says SMSC’s Automotive Information Systems group Vice-President and General Manager Dr. Christian Thiel. “Approximately 108 cars worldwide have been equipped with MOST technology so far. Daimler has relied on MOST technology since 2002 due to its performance, high quality and robustness.”

The MOST system lets the driver and passengers access a wide range of feature-rich infotainment systems which include multimedia functions such as CD or DVD changers, AM/FM radio, GPS-navigation systems, mobile telephones and digital media interfaces. Put simply, it’s going to up the level of fun in the new M-Class to new heights. So watch out for it if you’re planning to invest in this premium SUV.

2012 ML63 AMG Seen Near Nurburgring

Looking practically production-ready, pictures of the upcoming ML63 AMG have made the online world. To be introduced as a 2012 model, the thinly-disguised prototype showed a revised grill, new bumper contours and a quad-tailpipe exhaust, as if the rumble emanating from under the hood would not be enough to announce this SUV’s intent. It’s expected to have an uprated suspension, and big brakes can be seen at all four corners, behind the AMG-produced wheels.

Seen in the environs of Mercedes’ Nurburgring test grounds, the ML63 is expected to be powered by Mercedes’ biturbo V8 which displaces 5.5 liters and generates around 520 horsepower. The torque rating of about 515 lb-ft should be more than enough to launch this SUV with alacrity and hasten tire life. Transmission would probably be the excellent Speedshift 7-speed MCT, which would accelerate this sport SUV to 60 mph in under 5 seconds.

M-Class Based MLC To Battle BMW’s X6

Mercedes MLC Coupe Crossover 2014 587x352 M Class Based MLC To Battle BMWs X6

In a move that will cause rival BMW more than a few sleepless nights, Mercedes-Benz is being reported as moving forward with a new coupe crossover model that will bang heads squarely against the dismal-looking X6. Tentatively known as the MLC, this model will be built upon the M-Class platform, with the vehicle’s profile taking cues from Mercedes successful CLS styling. And styling is the operative word here, as Mercedes is reportedly favoring form over function for this crossover.

Dubious looks aside though, the X6 can be a mean performer, specially in M guise so Mercedes is tasking its AMG division to develop an AMG version of the MLC, which would have around 550 horsepower torquing its all-wheel drivetrain. That doesn’t mean though that the MLC won’t be available with more fuel-efficient powerplants such as its frugal diesels.

Despite the paucity of information, the MLC could hit showrooms as a 2014 entry, with manufacturing located at its Alabama plant. Pricing would be in the region of $85,000.

The new M-Class from Mercedes-Benz is the third generation of the vehicle that created the SUV segment to be offered for sale. The new model can now be ordered, and the first units will be delivered to customers in Europe in November. Prices start at €46,200 (€54,978 including 19 percent sales tax). “The M-Class has been a big success from the very start,” says Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars. “More than 1.2 million units have been sold since the vehicle was launched 14 years ago. That makes it not only the best-selling SUV in its segment, it also has the most loyal customers. The new M-Class will continue this success story and substantially boost our sales in the coming years.”

New M-Class boasts improved efficiency and first-rate safety

“SUVs from the M-Class segment are becoming increasingly popular worldwide,” adds Schmidt. “By 2015, the world market for these vehicles is expected to grow by about 30 percent. The new M-Class has what it takes to once again set benchmarks in the SUV sector and account for a substantial amount of this growth. On average, the new M-Class consumes 25 percent less fuel than its predecessor . I t will be the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its segment, regardless of whether it is equipped with a hybrid drive or not. At the same time, it boasts first-rate active and passive safety systems as well as a unique combination of agility, comfort, and driving pleasure.”
Thanks to the AdBlue exhaust gas treatment system, the two diesel versions ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC and ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC already stay well within the EU6 emissions limit taking effect in 2014. The package of safety features in the new M-Class encompasses up to nine airbags, the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system, the anticipatory safety system PRE-SAFE®, the tire pressure loss warning system, the adaptive brake light, and Brake Assist (BAS). In addition, the active hood further improves protection for other road users such as pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. As an option, the range of assistance systems can be further expanded with the Active Lane Keeping Assist or the Active Blind Spot Assist.

Chinese Police Department Disguises ML350 As A Honda

We can only scratch our heads in wonder at the idiotic attempt of this police department in China to fools its own constituency. Recently, reports surfaced that police officials in Fangchenggang, Guangxi, in China, rebadged their expensive ML350 patrol vehicle to disguise that fact that it cost almost $140,000 to purchase. By installing Honda CR-V badges on the grill and tailgate of the Mercedes SUV, said officials hoped citizens of the town would think they spent only $30,000, which is what a Honda CR-V costs in China.

But this stupidity backfired on the local police because anyone following automotive trends in China can see that that country is undergoing a revolution in terms of car and brand consciousness, as exemplified by the fact that Mercedes-Benz and its rivals have been reporting increasing sales year-on-year. So, it took only one local to point out that the Honda-badged patrol car was in fact a luxury ML350. This crass attempt has only served to incense the local citizens and that police department is in hotter water than it expected.
