Daimler AG aims to acquire 22.3% equity interest in Tognum AG, a global leading producer of off-highway engines. Daimler will be shelling out €20 per share. On this basis, the purchase price would be approximately €585 million ($904.7 million), making Daimler the largest shareholder in Tognum.

Tognum is one of the leading suppliers of high-speed, powerful diesel engines and complete propulsion systems for ships, heavy agricultural and rail vehicles, industrial drive systems and on-site power generators. Tognum will allow Daimler to tap into alternative power propulsion systems. This is definitely going to be an interesting partnership, let’s see how it turns out.

As more and more images of the new 2010 E Class surfaced, here are a couple of shots indicating as to how the exterior will look like. The interior shots (from AutoExpress) closely depicts our earlier insider’s scoop of the design, functions and materiality of the upcoming product. It wouldn’t be long before more camo comes loose to reveal more of the car’s bodywork and light designs.

From these shots, we can see clearly the bumper treatment and faint outline of the front and tail-light shapes. Under the plastics, the headlights look as a cross between the CLS & SL.

Mercedes-Benz announced today that they have signed a multiyear advertising and marketing partnership with the No 1 tennis player in the world – Roger Federer. Roger will join the “Swing for the Stars” program, part of the ‘Junior Tennis Development Program’ that Mercedes launched in partnership with the China Tennis Association. Mercedes-Benz “Swing for the Stars” Junior Tennis Development Program is designed to improve junior players’ skills and the coaches’ teaching level.

Roger: “It’s exciting to work with a top brand like Mercedes-Benz in China. I look forward to helping them grow their business while increasing the popularity of tennis in China,”

Daimler AG today presents its interim report on the first quarter of 2008. Daimler achieved EBIT (Earnings before interest and taxes) of €1,976 million ($3.082 billion) in the first quarter (Q1 2007: €3,292 million).
The Mercedes-Benz Cars division improved its EBIT and thus compensated for the lower earnings recorded by Daimler Trucks and Daimler Financial Services.

Earnings decreased primarily because EBIT in the first quarter of 2007 included a special gain of €1,563 million related to the transfer of EADS shares. In the first quarter of 2008, special gains were realized in connection with the sale of the real-estate properties at Potsdamer Platz (€449 million) and in connection with the transfer of EADS shares (€102 million). There were opposing effects from expenses of €491 million related to Chrysler.

Net profit amounted to € 1,332 million ($2.07 billion) (Q1 2007: €1,972 million ($3.075 billion))

Interview with Heikki After the Accident

Following his accident yesterday during the 2008 Spanish Grand Prix, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Heikki Kovalainen was taken to the Hospital General de Catalunya in Sant Cugat del Valles in Spain.

The team has established that Heikki’s speed was approximately 240km/h when the tyre deflated and about 130km/h when he hit the tyre barrier. He experienced a 27g deceleration.

CT scans at the hospital confirmed that Heikki had no head injuries and no broken bones but the Finn was kept in overnight for observation.

This morning Heikki underwent further tests and scans which all went positively and showed no problems. Consequently Heikki will be released from hospital later today. He will then stay in Spain for a few days relaxing before returning home to start a light training programme.
