On a long journey of 1,000 km the Italian car magazine “Quattroruote” measured the fuel consumption of the smart fortwo cdi and confirmed the standard consumption of 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres. If we calculate that into MPG, we get an astonishing 71 MPG. The current December issue of the magazine carries a report of the test drive. The smart travelled 1,000 kilometres from Rome to Salzburgon a single tank of fuel to see whether the stated standard consumption of just 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres could really be achieved. The route chosen largely consisted of motorways, but there were also detours and traffic jams because of roadworks, long uphill stretches and city traffic in Rome, Bolzano and Salzburg.
The new commercial for the C-Class Estate, which I posted here about a week ago, is certainly a fresh and interesting concept. In this video, you’ll be able to see the ad again, but this time, you will also see the “making of” the commercial, which is quite interesting to say the least.
For the third year running, readers of the magazine “Auto Zeitung” have voted the Mercedes-Benz R-Class the best van and once again awarded it the coveted “Auto Trophy”. First place as best car in the luxury class was also taken by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Yesterday the awards were received in Berlin by Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars, and the Executive Board member for Research and Development, Dr. Thomas Weber, in the presence of major personalities from the media, society, politics and business.

The Mercedes-Benz SilverFlow is among the highlights of the Los Angeles. Design Challenge, in which eight car design studios in southern California were given the assignment to create the “Robocar 2057″ as a combination of vehicle technology and artificial intelligence. Accordingly the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center of North America in Irvine, California, which is headed by Gorden Wagener, looked 50 years into the future and came up with the shimmering silver and gold Vision SilverFlow car. With its long, flowing lines and narrow, exposed wheels, this vision of the future is highly reminiscent of the golden years in motor racing during the 1930s.
The commercial is depicting the C-Class station wagon in “The Battle Against the Wind.” In this act of the C-Class station wagon opera, the wind attempts – and fails – to overtake the vehicle. It then goes into a rage, as a storm begins to brew and bolts of lighting are shot from the heavens. The C-Class then swerves to avoid a tree felled by the lightning, once again demonstrating its impressive agility. As in an actual stage production, the vehicle remains stationary, with props moving by it and special camera and lighting techniques creating the illusion that the car is being driven along the stage.
The commercial will also be shown during the in-flight entertainment program on Lufthansa flights. Shortly before the official launch of the commercial on TV stations, Mercedes-Benz TV will premiere the commercial and also present a “making-of” show. The campaign for the C-Class station wagon was developed in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz’ lead agency Jung von Matt, and it will be supplemented on the German market by extensive CRM and retail marketing measures, as well as radio commercials and large-format billboards.
Mercedes-Benz has kicked off a comprehensive marketing campaign for the new C-Class station wagon. The integrated campaign, which will be launched on the market on December 1, 2007, features numerous communication activities across all media channels and is designed to support the sales launch of the station wagon version of the C-Class – the best-selling model series in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. All the ads, in all types of media, will present the new station wagon on a stage – as the “star” of a modern opera. The opera theme was especially chosen to highlight the great presence and agility of the new model.
