Blind Spot Assist: Greater safety when changing lanes
Mercedes-Benz now offers a newly developed Blind Spot Assist system as an option for its S and CL-Class models, which is designed to help drivers when changing lanes.

Mercedes-Benz employs six short-range radar sensors for the new assistance system, which can be found in the front and rear bumpers. The sensors monitor the zone to the side and rear of the car on both the left and the right. In so doing, they cover the area known as the “blind spot” which drivers are unable to see in the exterior mirrors.

DaimlerChrysler AG’s Mercedes Car Group, the world’s second-biggest maker of luxury vehicles, said it reduced costs by 7.1 billion euros ($10 billion) in the last three years as part of a program to boost profitability.

“Our cost situation was not good when we began this program,” Rainer Schmueckle, chief operating officer of Mercedes, told journalists today at the company’s Stuttgart, Germany, headquarters. “We had quality problems. We needed to do something.”

The CORE program, implemented by former Mercedes head Eckhard Cordes in 2005, was designed to improve productivity and reduce the complexity as well as the number of parts that were involved in building Mercedes-Benz brand vehicles. Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche aims to raise Mercedes’s profit as a percentage of sales to “at least” 10 percent by 2010 and surpass competitor Bayerische Motoren Werke AG in deliveries.

MotorTrend has posted a set of the newest spy shots, which they say is the new rumored SLC. The SLC is believed to be the answer to the R8 from Audi. We still are not sure if this is just the new SL or a face lift, or if this is really the rumored SLC. I think we will have to wait to get some more spy shots that reveal more or from other sources, but at this point, our insider is saying that this could be the Black Series.

Jamie Green (Mika’s teammate in the HWA AG team) is the winner of the ninth DTM season round at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona. At the 2.977 kilometres long track, the Briton won from his fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers Bruno Spengler and Paul di Resta. For Green, it was his maiden victory in the DTM. The points’ scoring positions were completed by Alexandros Margaritis, Gary Paffett, Mathias Lauda (all Mercedes-Benz), Mike Rockenfeller and Lucas Luhr (both Audi). On the 50th of 58 laps, Audi had withdrawn all its remaining cars from the race as they had judged the driving conduct of the Mercedes-Benz drivers as being unfair. Before the season final at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, Mattias Ekstrà¶m is leading the drivers’ standings with 44 points from Bruno Spengler (42 points) and Martin Tomczyk (40 points).

My Day at the 2007 IAA in Frankfurt

frankfurt cityscape.thumbnail My Day at the 2007 IAA in Frankfurt
Being only 80 miles away from Frankfurt, I had no excuse not to visit this years IAA in Frankfurt. I got the opportunity to see the newest, coolest, and future cars up close, and sometimes even managed to sit in one. I must admit that I didn’t see half of the cars there. You just can’t image how many people there were; Mercedes, VW Group, Fiat Group and BMW were the busiest places, where you had to fight your way through the crowed to get a glimpse at the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, or the Lamborghini Reventon. Nevertheless, I am glad I went, but next time I will try and go during a work day, maybe even during the press days, if I ever get a press pass.

Check out the gallery and see what I saw.
