Mercedes-Benz and Luminar just announced the extension of their partnership for the 2024 season of Formula One. The new collaboration between the two companies was recently displayed on the automotive technology company’s booth at the 2024 Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show (CES). According to Mercedes, the beneficiary of the renewed partnership is the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Safety Car of the FIA. Luminar has inked a renewed deal with Mercedes-Benz to expand the application of its LiDAR technology into a broad range of vehicles bearing the three-pointed star logo. Lately, there have been talks that the three giants in the luxury car market, namely Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, were racing to acquire the HERE digital mapping technology of Nokia. The system is seen by the luxury automakers as a crucial element in their development of self driving cars. According to a report from Motor Authority, the premium car makers recently did the unthinkable. A Mercedes-Benz S-Class was recently spotted sporting a 3D mapping device on its roof. According to Jalopnik, the gizmo is a LIDAR array. Based on the website of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), LIDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. The device consists of a laser, scanner and GPS receiver. It functions by releasing light in a form of a pulsing laser to measure the source’s distances from objects. It combines the information it collects from the other data gathered by aerial sources to cover long distances.
