[F1] Mercedes AMG Petronas Courting Sebastian Vettel

Niki Lauda has confirmed that he is courting Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel, the man who is arguably the most dominant driver in Formula 1 at the moment. This was confirmed via the Bild am Sonntag newspaper. The effort to have Vettel join the team is something that Lauda says was begun by the previous motorsport director at Mercedes-Benz, Norbert Haug. As well he should, according to Red Bull F1 consultant Dr. Helmut Marko. Vettel is currently on top of the drivers’ standings, 10 points ahead of Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen. In addition, he is the youngest triple champion in the history of F1, among other records involving the word ‘youngest’… Continue Reading »

[F1] Mercedes Prepares for Spanish Grand Prix

There’s been a short break, but Formula One action resumes next weekend at the Circuit de Catalunya for the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix. Mercedes AMG Petronas is keen on improving the results it has posted so far after four races. Tyre management remains an issue, as is a lack of pace during the races. Lewis Hamilton sees Spain as a great opportunity “to get into the routine of the European season.” He added that being familiar with the track because of all the work during the preseason should help the team and allow the Spanish GP to be “a good benchmark” of Mercedes’ progress. “We know that the car went… Continue Reading »

[F1] Wolff: Brawn ‘is Team Principal and I Don’t Want to Change That’

Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team principal Ross Brawn was vocally backed by superstar driver Lewis Hamilton in last week’s Bahrain GP, and now it’s team executive director Toto Wolff’s turn. In an interview with the official F1 site, Wolff said that Brawn is still the team principal of the team. The statement came at the heels of a question asking about the arrival of McLaren’s Paddy Lowe to the Mercedes team next year. “One doesn’t obviate the other,” said Wolff. “Ross is team principal and I don’t want to change that.” He added that it is important for the team to focus on stability, referring to the ‘mountain of work’… Continue Reading »

[F1] Hamilton Finishes 5th, Rosberg 9th in Bahrain GP

Nico Rosberg failed to convert his second career pole into a victory Sunday, encountering pressure from those behind him right from the get-go of the 2013 Bahrain Grand Prix. He ended up finishing in P9, while Lewis Hamilton started from that spot and managed to move up to finish 5th with some superb driving throughout the race. Sebastian Vettel won the race, followed by Kimi Raikkonen and teammate Romain Grosjean. It was clear that Rosberg’s car lacked the pace to keep up with the other contenders at the Sakhir circuit. His strong driving managed to keep his pursuers at bay early, but he all but lost the race lead by… Continue Reading »

[F1] Rosberg Takes Pole Position in Bahrain GP

After some considerable setbacks to start the 2013 Formula One season, Nico Rosberg looks ready to get back on track. The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 driver took pole in the qualifying session for the Bahrain Grand Prix, securing only the second pole of his career and marking the first time in four races that he managed to post a better result than teammate Lewis Hamilton, who actually qualified at P4 but had to take a 5-place grid penalty for a gearbox change. Rosberg will be joined in the front row by defending champion Sebastian Vettel, with Fernando Alonso right behind him joined by teammate Felipe Massa. Massa moved up because… Continue Reading »

[F1] Mercedes with Mixed Performance in First Two Practices

The Bahrain Grand Prix might be too hot for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, as the team struggled with their tires and setups at the scorching Sakhir circuit. Lewis Hamilton was a distant 13th, with 1:35.611. Track temperatures in FP1 went as high as 45 degrees Celsius, while ambient temperatures peaked at 34 degrees. Rosberg’s 1:34.666 was good for eighth in the second practice, which featured track temperatures between 39-41 degrees Celsius, while Hamilton took tenth with 1:34.976. Mercedes F1 Team Gears Up for Bahrain GP

Being one of the most demanding races on the Formula One calendar, the Bahrain Grand Prix is seen as a big test for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team. With four different 300-plus kph sections, eight braking locations, and 11 of the 15 corners being taken at 200 kph or less and in fourth gear or lower, it truly is a challenge–one that Mercedes must hurdle to prove it is capable of true contention. Lewis Hamilton is in the thick of things as far as the drivers’ standings go, right now at fourth place but very much within striking distance. “The Bahrain circuit is a real challenge, particularly for the… Continue Reading »
