Rosberg is 2016 F1 champion

Nico Rosberg did not win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix… but he didn’t need to. His Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton needed a miracle to overcome Rosberg’s lead in the points, and while Hamilton took the race win, Rosberg took second place, which was more than enough to become the 2016 F1 champion. This is Rosberg’s first F1 championship, having spent 11 seasons and accomplishing 206 starts so far in his F1 career. He capitalized on a hot start, winning the first four races of the season and scoring just enough points to keep Hamilton’s charge at bay. He became F1 champion 34 years after his father, Keke Rosberg, accomplished the… Continue Reading »

Hamilton takes Brazilian Grand Prix, stays in hunt for title

Lewis Hamilton won the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, and thus kept his title hopes alive. In a rainy afternoon at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, Hamilton outraced his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg to stay alive in the championship quest heading into the final race of the 2016 Formula One season. Rain persisted throughout the race, which led to repeated appearances by the safety car and also a couple of red flag situations. The race started under the safety car, and it would keep getting called back to the track because of the changing weather conditions. There were also two red flag situations in total, and at some point many doubted whether the… Continue Reading »

Hamilton wins Mexico GP; Rosberg in second

Lewis Hamilton took the victory at the Mexico GP to pull closer to Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in the last dash for the 2016 F1 title. Rosberg’s lead now stands at 19 points with two races remaining on the calendar. Daniel Ricciardo took the third place on the podium–but took the long route to get there. First, it was his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen who actually finished in third. However, a penalty for a skirmish with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel caused Ricciardo to get demoted to fourth place. This bumped Vettel–who finished fourth–up to third, but a penalty was also imposed on him. And so it was that Ricciardo was… Continue Reading »

Rosberg wins Japanese Grand Prix as Mercedes clinches constructors’ title

Nico Rosberg extended his lead in the standings as the Mercedes team clinched the 2016 F1 constructors’ championship at the Japanese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton, who seemed to be acting out in some of the official events during the weekend, finished third. Sandwiched between the Mercedes cars was the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. This is his third-straight runner-up finish. Rosberg was the frontrunner from the start and never looked back. Hamilton, meanwhile, had a bad start but fought back to claim a podium finish. He just couldn’t get past Verstappen towards the end. He will surely wince at Rosberg extending the lead. But with four races left, there are still plenty… Continue Reading »

Hamilton flames out of Malaysian GP; Rosberg finishes third

Lewis Hamilton could only muster cries of “oh no, no” as flames erupted from his Mercedes F1 car’s engine late into the Malaysian GP and with the British driver leading comfortably. What would have been certain victory fizzled out, and he looked on as teammate Nico Rosberg extended his lead in the championship race by finishing in third place. It was a Red Bull 1-2 finish at the Sepang Circuit. Daniel Ricciardo beat teammate Max Verstappen to become only the other non-Mercedes race winner this season apart from, well… Verstappen.
