Fab Design SLS AMG Disappoints

With the Geneva Auto Show in full swing, the public has been treated to fantastic and fabulous designs from manufacturers and tuners all over the world. As is typical of auto shows everywhere, the designs that bloom from fertile minds range from the fantastic to the forgettable.

One of the unforgettable stands in the 2011 Geneva show is Fab Design’s. Showcasing a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG no less, this aftermarket house has succeeded in turning the awesome SLS AMG into a cartoony rendition of this unique car. It’s true that in car shows, eye-catching color schemes are almost necessary to capture the attention of thousands of visitors. Somehow though, Fab Design’s showcase hasn’t quite come across as what the design house may have intended. Granted, the SLS AMG is already a very glamorous and beautiful car when it leaves the factory. So, any attempts to beautify it further should be an exercise in restraint because any attempts can easily wreck the elegance the SLS exudes. The exterior treatment may escape the disgust of purists but get to the interior and you see something that would be more fitting in a Japanese tuner car. It is, to put it bluntly, tacky, and if Fab Design was hoping for accolades with this presentation, it will probably be non-existent.

We’ve already given you the rundown on tuner extraordinaire BRABUS’ latest masterpiece, the BRABUS 700 Biturbo based off the Merc SLS AMG. Well, the wide-body sports car just made its official debut live at the Geneva Motor Show, taking its place amidst the bright lights and the best cars.

In the live photos, we see the BRABUS 700 Biturbo spread open for the whole world to see—baring its B63 twin-turbocharged system that churns out 700 horsepower and 626 lb-ft of torque, along with the sporty interior inside the tuner’s familiar WIDESTAR body kit. The interior features include fine black and white leather, a new steering wheel and matte pedals and foot rests made from anodized aluminum.

The body is built from lightweight materials with carbon fiber added in the mix. The vehicle is also fitted with a custom Bilstein suspension system to help handle the extreme amounts of power and there are 20-inch alloy rims that adorn the wheels.

The Geneva Motor Show will run from March 3 through 13.

It generates a whopping 700 horsepower, 626 lb-ft of torque and is wrapped in the trappings of the tuner’s WIDESTAR body—that’s the SLS AMG-based BRABUS 700 Biturbo, set to take center stage at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.

BRABUS engineers have fitted the car with a new custom twin-turbocharger system on top of the SLS AMG’s standard 8-cylinder machine. Both of the tubrochargers have air diverter valves as well. There are also high-performance exhaust manifolds that allow for maximum flow of the exhaust gases.

The specifically-developed turbochargers are made with left-turning chargers to eliminate the drawbacks of right-turning versions. This helps achieve the optimal gas dynamics and flow for the car to give it top-class performance and an astounding power curve. The engine’s internals have also been modified with special BRABUS-forged pistons and are lubricated with synthetic ARAL motor oil.

Aside from raw hardware, there’s also a new engine management system that maps the ignition and injection so that the high-performance components in the 700 Biturbo are all in sync. There’s integrated boost pressure control that helps deliver the high amount of power while still meeting Euro V emissions standards.

At the rear end, there are four slanted tailpipes made from ultra-light titanium. A cockpit-controlled pneumatic flap system helps give the car a distinct sound compared to the stock exhaust system.

With the car’s WIDESTAR body, prospective buyers are in for a sporty entrance at all times. Additionally, aerodynamics have not been sacrificed as the car has been tested extensively using a wind tunnel. Lightweight carbon-fiber compounds were used to keep the car light but still sturdy.

Asian tuner entrant Revozport has set its sights on the E-Class Mercedes with a body modification kit made from carbon fiber. This kit was designed for the W207 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. According to the company, “The aggressive but yet subtle design is to bring out the full character of the E Coupe and giving its owners the unique look but not looking like a hooligan”.

Using the Rezonance name, the kit includes a front bumper with LED daytime running lights, a splitter with two settings, a carbon kevlar hood, side skirts, a trunk spoiler, roof spoiler and a rear diffuser panel with LED reverse and fog lights copied from the E-Class’ big brother, the SLS AMG. Revozport claims that the hood gives an 8 kilogram reduction in weight.

Revozport aims to have the kit released by the first week of March and distributed worldwide within the month. It must be said that the pictures released by the company show a nice integration of the kit with the W207 E-Class and that they do not look like cheap ripoffs. Additionally, Revozport also produces carbon fiber front grilles, mirror covers, chrome insert covers for the trunk and other accessories for other vehicles.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has received a multitude of customizations from a wide range of prominent tuners. German specialist Hamann has now added its own take on the luxury grand tourer. Dubbed the Hawk, Hamman’s tuned SLS AMG is slated for a Geneva Auto Show debut this week.

There are no double-takes needed to notice the custom fittings of the Hawk. Decked in Everose Gold, the unique colorway itself is an attention-grabber. This is further enhanced by helpings of carbon fiber on the trunk as well as the hood. Hamann also added a new front bumper complete with bigger air inlets and LED lights, plus a big spoiler found at the rear. These add-ons were tested extensively using a wind tunnel to ensure that performance is still at the highest level.

Like all great tuners, Hamann was not content giving the SLS AMG a cosmetic upgrade. The 6.2-liter V8 power plant has been upgraded to 628 brake horsepower, up around 65 bhp from the stock car’s engine. Top speed is 320 kph / 199 mph, and the Hawk goes from 0-60mph in a mere 3.6 tics.

Additionally, the SLS AMG Hawk has been given a coilover kit with adjustable dampers, a quartet of springs that have been progressively wound, 30-mm lowering for the body, and lightweight forged wheels.
