MBUSA donating two ML-Class SUVs to automotive technology students

Mercedes-Benz puts a premium on education, specifically automotive technology. That is why AT students at the Tuscaloosa Center for Technology, or TCT, will soon experience what it’s like to be working on cutting edge automotive technology. How is this possible? Through the generosity of Mercedes-Benz.

The company is donating a pair of their high-end premium SUVs, namely a 2006 ML500 and a 2006 ML350, to TCT to help students of Automotive Technology better understand the workings of a world-class premium vehicle. Painful as it may seem to some, the pair of SUVs will be disassembled, and reassembled, under the able hands of instructors and of course, the students, to expound learning of Mercedes-Benz technology. The donation in turn will prepare the students better for their future, specifically the challenges of job hunting.

MBUSA is not only making this donation, but the company is also going to share equipment and opportunities for TCT students to visit their state-of-the-art plant and training center in Tuscaloosa to help foster better appreciation of working with Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Who knows? The very students may themselves get to work for Mercedes-Benz. As long as they work hard, they just might make it.

The pair of SUVs are set to be delivered on Friday, 10th of September at around 9 in the morning. The students better start sharpening their technological armada, and interest of course, in preparation for their arrival.

Spy Cam: The 2012 GL-Class under guise

Some people find SUVs more exciting than passenger cars. Is it their sheer size or their calling for the off-road? Well, maybe it’s because they’re more practical when you’re carrying lots of cargo, including people. Whatever your reason may be, here’s something that might tickle your fancy—spy photos of the future GL-Class.

Yes, Mercedes-Benz is in the process of one-upping the current GL. Apparently, they don’t want to give first dibs to anyone about the details. But that won’t stop people like us from posting teasers. You are teased by spy photos, aren’t you?

The proto you see in the photos was captured in southern Germany, coming home to its development center after playing for some time outside the yard. There are hints that the next GL used a stretched ML platform as groundwork. So that just begs the question, “Will the new GL be using an ML engine?” Well, perhaps the 3 or 4-liter diesels, or maybe even the 5.5-liter gasoline engine. Who knows? It will probably also feature a 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic tranny.

We can’t really be certain about any of this. One thing though—the photos suggest that Merc designers are trying to put a more friendly face onto the GL. That means more width and more aerodynamic potential. Heck, it has LED daytime running lights as well.

Date of potential release? Probably in 2012.

Just stay tuned folks. There’s still a lot of questions hanging about the next GL.

R-Class crossover sells nine times as many this year

04 2011 r class mercedes Benz 597x397 R Class crossover sells nine times as many this year
With all the fuss on sales increase across the board for all Mercedes-Benz product ranges, one model line outshines the rest in sheer figures—the R-Class crossover. Why? Well, simply because it went up to 314 units sold up till July of 2010 as compared to a mere 36 in the same period last year. We’re talking about a nine-fold increase here, folks, and not merely percentages.

The R-Class crossover is currently being produced in Mercedes-Benz’s Vance plant. Now, if you sum up all the sales last month of all 3 models being made in Vance, you’ll get a figure that’s way beyond the average sales of all Mercedes-Benz plants around the country. The other two models by the way are the M-Class SUV and the GL-Class full-sized SUV. Theirs figured around 17.9 percent increase for the M-Class, selling around 1,973 units, and 39.7 percent increase for the GL-Class with 1,179 units sold, up till last month.

With such figures, it looks like the automotive industry is back on track—for the premium vehicle segment at the least. Other segments have yet to make a full recovery. For Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, it’s all going in the right direction, especially in the US.

Insider Spy: 2012 GL-Class gearing for a bold appearance

GL Class spy shots Insider Spy: 2012 GL Class gearing for a bold appearance
How much do you weigh? How much do your family members and friends weigh? These numbers should make you realize that a sedan or coupe just doesn’t quite cut it when you need to travel with them tagging along. What you need is something bigger—something that has the guts to pull your combined body weights and still look powerfully graceful. With that mind, we humbly present to you the latest in Mercedes-Benz’s luxury line of SUV’s—the 2012 GL-Class.

Set to have a heart similar to the ML-Class, the new GL-Class is very much still sitting in its conceptual stages. Power looks to be promising with Mercedes-Benz’s MOVE technology—cutting edge direct injection V6 and twin turbo V8 engines. Actual figures are still shrouded in mystery though, until Mercedes-Benz decides to make things public.

Style-wise, the new GL-Class is expected to retain some of its predecessor’s lines, although the extensive camouflaging up front and on the sides suggest major distinctions. The grille seems to have at least two to three bars, a lot less than the current GL, or perhaps the gaps have been widened for better airflow. Headlights look pretty much unique, and so do the taillights which have been repositioned on the tailgate area.

Other than, the new GL looks entirely promising. Bet your cards we’ll be here to update you as soon as Mercedes-Benz releases official information to the press.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate dominates in Autocar mag’s SUV challenge

What happens when you pit three SUVs of the same price tag and the same target market against each other? You get one hell of an endorsement for the winning brand, and is best served cold to the losing parties.

The contestants – the BMW X1, the Audi A5 Sportback and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate. Autocar magazine’s benchmark of this test was a Mercedes-Benz C250 CDI in Elegance trim, priced at 29,930 euros. In comparison, the BMW X1 xDrive23rd SE costs 29,900 euros whilst the Audi A5 Sportback in S-Line trim costs 29,975 euros.

With prices are settled, let’s get into specifics. Handling and performance wise, the C250 takes the cake for its 201bhp 2.2-liter diesel that has the highest torque numbers and widest power band compared to the X1 and A5. It also corners better than the other two, maintaining balance and stability even with the throttle planted. The X1, on the other hand, is silent at speed but is heavier and less involving. The A5 just falls short of power with a 168bhp engine, despite its 6-speed transmission.

Cabin wise, Mercedes-Benz barely wins with more luggage space and ride height. Better luck next time to both BMW and Audi.
