SMART Sites To Provide Charging Stations For Electric Vehicles

modalterminal SMART Sites To Provide Charging Stations For Electric Vehicles

If it were possible to time travel an automobile user from the 50s or 60s to the upcoming terminal to be built in Tennessee, he would be bewildered by the fact that there were no gas pumps to fill up his car. Add to that the terminal’s futuristic design and he would probably think that modern conveyances were the stuff of science fiction.

In Knoxville, such a terminal is being built with the moniker of SMART, for Smart Modal Area Recharge Terminal. This site and its technology were created by the Electric Power Research Institute and the Tennessee Valley Authority. The proponents of the project hope that it will surpass all other similar projects in terms of efficiency and power. SMART was built to harness solar power to charge vehicle batteries, in the same way that today’s petrol-engined vehicles pull up to a gas pump to fill up with fuel. In this case, it will be solar power converted to electricity which will fill up an electric car’s batteries. Equipped with a storage system, the terminal would have 5 kilowatt-hours of power for each charging space, of which there will be 10.

“Electricity as a transportation fuel can benefit the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and it can save consumers money by lowering their driving costs. These all-in-one charging stations are important to the development of electric vehicles and also to TVA’s goal to provide cleaner, low-cost energy”, said the TVA senior vice president of Environment and Technology, Anda Ray.

The terminal will shortly undergo field trials of between three to six months duration, where TVA will asses the viability of installing more terminals. TVA’s goal is for Knoxville, Chattanooga and Nashville to provide 125 charging points between the SMART sites.

Drawing Submissions Leak To Reveal Smart Roadster Design

With the New Year comes reports that Mercedes-Benz has trademarked a design for a smart roadster. The two-seat runabout is unmistakably a smart design and the drawings show a remarkably appealing vehicle that looks to be a hit if it is produced. Topless roadsters always evoke images of fun and spirited driving but of course, given the smart car’s current engines, the spirited part of the equation might not be up to the task.

The designs look to be a preview for the next generation of the smart fortwo line. Although the designs – courtesy of the patent office – are for a topless two-seater, it is not hard to imagine smart putting a roof on the preview and selling it as the replacement for the current fortwo. The Tridion safety cell is still in place and the overall shape evokes smart designs but a lot of detail work has been done to make the car look new.

However, all the information at the moment comes from the pictures that have made it to the Internet. There is nothing yet on the mechanicals or other detail and so the public will have to wait and see what other information filters through over time.

Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, 8 Others Named Eligible for UK Subsidy

The venerable Smart fortwo electric drive has been named as among the first 9 electric vehicles to be eligible for up to £5,000 in subsidy starting January 1 next year, as part of a government-backed bid to support the adoption of electric vehicles and electric technology that will help reduce the harmful emissions contributed by the automotive sector.

Philip Hammond, British Secretary of State for Transport, gave his thoughts about the program. “Anyone who’s filled up at a petrol station recently will realise that the ability to recharge overnight at 1-3 pence per kilometre is extremely attractive,” said Hammond in an interview with the BBC.

The subsidy allows prospective buyers to get 25 percent off their EV purchase, up to a maximum amount of £5,000. It’s a considerable incentive, and should help seal the deal for many still on the fence.

There is also a £20m fund set up to accommodate additional charging points over the country, located at the east of England, the Midlands, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Greater Manchester. These new locations will add to the current charging points already assigned to London, north-east England and Milton Keynes.

The other cars greenlit for the subsidy program are the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Peugeot iOn, Nissan Leaf, TaTa Vista, Citroen CZero, Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Vauxhall Ampera, and the Chevrolet Volt. The i-MiEV and iON will accompany the Fortwo electric drive when the trio goes on sale this January, although the latter two vehicles will only be available via a four-year lease.

smart, in being the first car brand to develop a drive app for the iPhone recently won two “Mobile Excellence Awards” initiated by the ITV Alliance. In evaluating the various innovative entries, the jury at www.mobilexawards.com evaluated the submissions using five main criteria: strategic initiative, impact of technology used, creativity, ease of use and reach and execution and market success.

At a gala dinner at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, Johann Jungwirth, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, Inc. accepted the two first place awards won by the smart app for the iPhone®, those being the Best User Interface for Mobiles and Mobile Music.

By putting together a smart kit and cradle for the iPhone, the popular device becomes a multimedia trip computer optimised for the smart fortwo in terms of function and design. Functions like hands-free calling, internet radio, a smart touch navigation system plus, of course, your personal music are incorporated. A function called the Car Finder will , together with your iPhone, help you go to where your car has been parked. The two elements which make up the system are the cradle with built-in microphone and auto-mute loudspeakers and the smart drive application for the iPhone.

Available since August of this year, the smart drive kit for the iPhone is available from smart dealers for around $320. The Apple App Store provides the software for less than $15. Upgrading the navigation system will cost in the neighborhood of $65 per year.
