F-CELL World Drive enters final leg back to Europe

Two days from now, Mercedes-Benz’s F-CELL World Drive campaign will leave China’s Auto Shanghai showroom floors and head for the final and lengthiest round of its world tour. It’ll travel all the way from Shanghai through Kazakhstan and Russia until it makes its way back into Europe, it’s original starting point.

Almost 14,000 kilometers will have been covered by the B-Class F-CELL with power coming from its three fuel cells. 5,300 kilometers of that distance has been covered in Australia alone. It is expected to finish its tour of the world in Europe, through countries such as Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany.

What really makes the tour’s final leg interesting is that there has been no map material loaded onto the F-CELL’s backup navigational unit. Thus, participants have to drive with a greater level of anticipation as well as attention. Of course, there are maps of the said countries found in each vehicle.

The tour is part of celebrations marking Mercedes-Benz’s 125th year anniversary since its founding. The real aim of the company is to prove to both fans and critics of the German car manufacturer the technical maturity that is involved in creating a fuel cell powered car, much more driving it around several cities.

Daimler to Produce Sprinter Vans in Russia

SprinterVan Daimler to Produce Sprinter Vans in Russia

Daimler AG is recognized as the biggest manufacturer of trucks worldwide, and now it is expanding its Russian commercial-vehicle presence by manufacturing Sprinter vans as part of a partnership with OAO GAZ of billionaire Oleg Deripaska.

This endevour entails some 100 million euro (around $131 million) in investments from Daimler in order to make the plant ready to produce a planned 250,000 units of the delivery van annually. The GAZ plant can be found in Nizhny Novgorod.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said that the Russian commercial-vehicle market “is offering major growth prospects,” and of course it would be foolish to ignore such an opportunity. That’s why Daimler is capitalizing on the emerging market in the country, and by 2020 it expects Russia to demand 275,000 units of light commercial vehicles each year. The Russian market currently draws 177,000 units currently.

Currently, Daimler is really enjoying its dominance over the light truck segment. Sales in Brazil, China, India and Russia have increased by 64 percent over recent 8-month figures. Sales have increased by 27 percent over a nine-month period, and the van unit of the company saw a 28-percent increase over the past eight months. Total revenue increased to 5.6 billion euros, thanks largely to a 44-percent increase in production to 160,000 vehicles.

Next target: GAZ Gorky Automobile Plant in Russia

There aren’t so many fans of Russian made cars, perhaps not even in Russia. Still, there is one automotive manufacturer in the country that’s getting a lot of attention. GAZ, who currently manufacturers the Volga Siber at the Gorky Automobile plant (insert Wind of Change chorus here), is getting wooed by a lot of investors wanting to tap into the Russian market. Yep, you guessed it—Mercedes-Benz’s parent company Daimler wants in. And the company will stop at nothing to get the plant to producing the E-Class. And with good reason too.

The Volga Siber is actually based on the Chrysler Sebring platform. As true-blooded Mercedes-Benz fans (you know you are), you should know that there was a time when Daimler and Chrysler were partners. So, why not upgrade the Volga Siber (or its platform) to the E-Class instead? Makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?

If Daimler and Mercedes-Benz successfully gets their hands on the plant, it will be a big blow to fellow German rival BMW, which has already made its presence felt in Russia. It’s all about who takes the biggest slice of cake, and Mercedes-Benz won’t settle for anything less than the largest.

The company has a lot of rival suitors, though. Indian company Tata motors is just one of them. There’s also General Motors putting the pressure on Tata. It’s worth noting the GAZ Chairman Bo Anderson was once head of worldwide purchasing for GM. Small world, isn’t it? Daimler needs to spend quite a lot to get the wind of change in its favor.

With the establishment of its own bank, Daimler Financial Services, the financial services provider of Daimler AG, will be moving into the fast-growing vehicle and consumer credit markets in Russia. DaimlerChrysler Bank Rus, which will be renamed Mercedes-Benz Bank Rus upon approval by Russia’s central bank, will offer car loans for private and commercial customers in the country. The new bank will officially open in Moscow on November 7, 2007.

Daimler Financial Services’ entry into the car loan business will round out the company’s product portfolio in Russia. “The establishment of the new bank will make us the first foreign automaker to have its own bank and its own leasing company in Russia,” said Daimler Financial Services CEO Jürgen Walker during a press conference in Berlin. “As a result, we will now be able to offer the complete range of financial services from a single source. We plan to grow dynamically in Russia: Over the medium term we’re looking to achieve a contract volume of €400 million. At the end of 2006, we had a portfolio of €35 million.”
