The 2011 R300 CDI was launched by Mercedes-Benz Australia, and this Aussie version is seen sporting a range of exterior changes while still packing some high-tech interior specs. The updated R-Class comes with some key exterior tweaks over the standard one we saw at the 2010 New York Auto Show, including a sharpened front, bi-xenon headlights reminiscent of the ML-Class units, and running LED lights housed in the side cutouts near the lower air intake area.

The R300′s rear also gets exterior updates via a new bumper, a diffuser, new trim integrated on the tailpipe, and tweaked tail lights. Going to the interior, we see that it gets some advanced features, including 3 rows of seats that can be arranged in a number of configurations to suit the owner’s needs. The interior gets an Easy Pack tailgate, eight airbafs, and Neck-Pro head restraints.

The electronic features include a 16.5-centimeter display for the center console, sat nav, a reverse camera, 4GB of onboard storage for mp3 files (with expandable storage), a DVD player and a 6-disc CD player.

The R300 inherits the same 3.0-liter V6 diesel power plant from its predecessor coupled with the updated version of Mercedes-Benz’s seven-speed automatic transmission.

The Australian take on the R-Class fetches for a whopping $92,200. That seems a bit pricey, but it does have the Mercedes-Benz pedigree.

Fuel filter leak recall issued on 2011 models

Heads up, folks! If you’re driving a 2011 E-Class, GL-Class, M-Class or R-Class, then you’d better call your dealer right away. Mercedes-Benz has just issued a recall on these models due to leakage problems on their fuel filters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there is an o-ring on the fuel system that may not have been lubricated and installed properly, thus causing fuel to spill out.

The recall bulletin from NHTSA provides specific details on diesel variants of these models, but our friends over at The Car Connection says otherwise, confirming that the problem affects gasoline variants as well. So be warned and be safe. Your dealer should replace the problematic fuel filter free of any charge whatsoever. It should be out publicly sometime before December. For your safety’s sake, call your dealer right now. You’ll never know when that bit of fuel catches fire from a cigarette stub.

We’ve all seen how fire chases a trail of leaked fuel. If you’re a fan of Bruce Willis in Die Hard, you should be able to recall how John McClane brought down, or blew up rather, a plane at mid takeoff. How did he do that? Well, he conveniently opened up the fuel door cap on the left wing and let out the fuel. He then jumped off the plane and set fire to the trail. This isn’t meant to scare you folks. It’s just a reminder of the hazards of fuel leaks.

Thanks to almost 230,000 voters from all over the world who cast their choice for Europe’s most popular car, three Mercedes-Benz vehicles were chosen in an online survey by Europe’s biggest automobile marketplace on the Internet, none other than AutoScout24. So far, the web company has done nine surveys with great response from their avid visitors.

So which car came up on top as Europe’s most favorite car? It’s unanimous—the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG super car is without any contention the most adored and wished for European car in the market today, being voted out of almost 1.8 million candidates.

Cutting edge quality German engineering can only be credited partially for such an honor. It’s the blood, sweat and tears that this premium car company has shed over the decades to garner such a loyal following. Not to mention the history that surrounds the SLS AMG, which brings you back to the 1950′s when an iconic sports car was made legendary in the form of the original 300 SL Gullwing.

And so, with its rich heritage and technological prowess, the SLS AMG won sans rival in all three categories. This includes the super sports car and coupe categories.

Celebrating victory with the SLS AMG are the R-Class winning in the van and compact van categories, the C-Class in the medium-size category, the E-Class in the intermediate category, and the E-Class Cabrio in the cabriolet category.

The 2011 R-Class facelifted

People buy cars for different reasons—some for mere aesthetics, others for sporty performance—while others for mere comfort. Put all three and you get the characteristics of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Of course, if you’re both a wife of a busy CEO and the mother of three wonderfully active tenderfoots, then you’ll be better off driving an MPV—short for Multi-Purpose Vehicle—so they’ll have enough space to run about. Just make sure they’re strapped securely when you’re mobile.

Put both words—Mercedes-Benz and MPV together—and you get the R-Class. The 2011 model gets a redefined and totally aggressive front end, a smoother rear end and an attractive and totally teched out gauge cluster. A newly designed three-point star sits magnificently on the extremely large front grille, accompanied by equally innovative fenders, bonnet, grille and headlamps that scream Mercedes-Benz’s new styling.

The headlights, sitting further from each other, are extremely angular and give the 2011 R-Class a wider, more dynamic, stance. Think along the lines of mascara applied professionally by a makeup artist. The rear end, meanwhile, gets equally angular tail lights and a restyled bumper. Add a diffuser to the mix plus a stylish tail pipe trim and that completes the cleanly shaved and totally edgy rear end.

The new R-Class will be able to comfortably seat a total of seven individuals—perfect for moms and their school children and shopping bags.

The new-generation R-Class has the appearance of being cast from a single mould. The completely redesigned front end with its restyled bonnet, wings, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper gives the entire vehicle a harmonious, dynamic and powerful presence. On request, the front end of the R-Class can be further enhanced by a chrome clasp with integrated daytime driving lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps. Light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke, 5-twin-spoke or 10-spoke design with sizes from 43.2 to 53.3 centimetres (17 to 21 inches) and the revised rear end with its new bumper cladding, modified tail lights and integrated exhaust tailpipes likewise increase the attractiveness of the model-year 2010 R-Class. In addition to the fresher exterior, it is the inner values of the R-Class that impress. These include the economy of space of modern MPVs combined with the high quality and prestige of classic Mercedes-Benz saloon cars. At the same time the latest generation offers the interior variability of its predecessor, while scoring with the robustness and all-wheel drive attributes of the Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
