Colombian Priest Sells Mercedes-Benz After Pope’s Plea

We reported that Pope Francis did not ride his new Mercedes-Benz Popemobile at an appearance less than a week after being handed the keys to the custom-made vehicle. He also pleaded to Catholic priests and nuns to avoid the latest and more luxurious car models. One Colombian priest has heeded the call, putting his E 200 convertible up for sale. That’s exactly what Father Hernando Fayid is doing, even though the car was really a gift from his brothers the past year, as he told a Colombian TV network in an interview. According to Fr. Fayid, his past rides included a horse, a bicycle, and a bus, and that letting the… Continue Reading »

Will Pope Francis Use His New Popemobile?

It hasn’t been a week since Mercedes-Benz chief Dr. Dieter Zetsche personally handed over the keys of the new popemobile to Pope Francis, and now the head of the Catholic Church already seems like he won’t get to use his specially-designed Mercedes-Benz vehicle. The pope was seen on an old Fiat Campagnola while going around Lampedusa, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, for his first pastoral visit outside of Rome. Just last Saturday, the pope said that it pains him to see priests and nuns that drive luxury cars or even the latest-model vehicles. He said to a group of priests and nuns that, while cars may be necessary, there’s… Continue Reading »

Dr. Dieter Zetsche Hands Over Popemobile Keys To Pope Francis

The key to the Popemobile was handed over by Daimler AG Board Chairman and Mercedes-Benz Cars head Dr. Dieter Zetsche to Pope Francis during a private meeting held at the Vatican recently. The M-Class was built specifically for Pope Francis, who will use it during an official visit to Brazil at the end of the month. The company has provided vehicles for official trips and appearances of the Roman Pontiff in over eighty years. The first vehicle that the company provided was a Nürburg 460 Pullman saloon in 1930. The vehicle was used by Pope Pius XI. In the 1960s, the company provided a Mercedes-Benz 300d Landaulet convertible that was… Continue Reading »

Zetsche, Mercedes-Benz Deliver New Popemobile

The new specially-made Popemobile was delivered recently in Rome, straight to Pope Benedict XVI himself. On hand was Daimler AG chairman and Mercedes-Benz Cars Head, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, to personally deliver the special vehicle to the head of the Catholic Church at the Vatican. “It is an honour for Mercedes-Benz to be accompanying His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on his future journeys with our new Popemobile,” Zetsche said. “As such, we are continuing our long-standing partnership with the Vatican. For more than 80 years now, Popes have been able to rely on the quality, safety and comfort of our Mercedes-Benz vehicles.” As far as safety goes, the special-purpose body of… Continue Reading »

Pope Benedict XVI’s Hybrid Popemobile in Development

While Pope Benedict XVI has yet to approach the level of popularity that his predecessor had, he’s already miles ahead of any before him when it comes to gearing up with green tech. Take, for instance, the new hybrid Popemobile that’s currently being developed by Mercedes-Benz. As stated by sources, what the Pope really had in mind was a fully electric vehicle. However, there are other things to be considered as well—one of the most important of which is the Pope’s own safety. An EV simply may not be enough to take the Pope to safety during an emergency, so they decided on the next best thing: a hybrid that’s… Continue Reading »

1965 Merc 600 Pullman Popemobile in America for the First Time

While the current version of the Popemobile is really designed for safety and functionality, in years past the official ride of the head of the Catholic Church was never short in the style department. Take for example the 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman landaulet Popemobile, which will be on American soil for only the first time ever when it takes part at the 16th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in March. The automaker dusted the vehicle off from its Mercedes-Benz Museum and shipped it Stateside especially for the Concours event, which will be held from March 11 through 13, with celebrations and showcases held at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, Florida and… Continue Reading »
