Daimler Donates €500,000 to Relief Efforts in the Philippines

After the super typhoon called Haiyan devastated central Philippines last weekend, whole cities were wiped out. Almost a million people lost their homes according to a UN estimate, and thousands of lives were lost. As the survivors continue to struggle with the loss of life and poverty, the government as well as international organizations have been hard at work in providing aid to the affected cities and towns. Abaca Fiber as Mercedes-Benz A-Klasse’s Underbody Protection

For years, Daimler has been known to use natural fibers such as hemp, sisal, flax and coconut to Mercedes-Benz cars’ interior. Now, the company is taking the use of natural fiber to the next level, using it for car exterior. The underbody protection will now be abaca fibers as opposed to the usual glass fibers. The first model to experience the development of this is the Mercedes-Benz A-Klasse. A Philippines producer, Manila Cordage, will supply the company with these fibers coming from the musa textilis plant, a plant within the same family as banana.
