Ross Brawn to step down as Mercedes AMG Petronas team principal

For a while now, the future of Ross Brawn as the team principal of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team has been up in the air. However, the team has officially announced that Brawn will be stepping down from his post by December 31. This formally sets into motion a transition of leadership roles to Executive Toto Wolff and Executive Technical Director Paddy Lowe, the latter moving from McLaren in the middle of this year. Brawn talked of the right timing, which he said was the biggest consideration as far as his decision was concerned. Given the strength of the team’s executive leadership, it’s not so hard to see why… Continue Reading »

Rosberg 5th, Hamilton 9th as Mercedes Bags Second in the 2013 F1 Season

While the results of the season were already a foregone conclusion, teams not named Red Bull were still fighting for something up until the last race. For the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, it was all about finishing strong and clinching second place in the constructors’ standings. Nico Rosberg finished fifth at the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix, while teammate Lewis Hamilton withstood a drive-through penalty to still finish within the championship points at ninth. Overall, Mercedes improved a lot from 2012, thanks in part to the acquisition of Hamilton and also a renewed focus on setups and performance. The 360 championship points of the team was a marked improvement, as… Continue Reading »

Mercedes’ Rosberg Finishes in Podium; Hamilton 7th at Abu Dhabi GP

Nico Rosberg secured a second-straight podium finish this past weekend, finishing in third place at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix behind yet another Red Bull one-two. Fellow Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton settled for seventh place. More importantly, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team managed to score more points than their red-clad rivals Ferrari, padding their lead in the battle for second place in the constructors’ standings. Mercedes outscored Ferrari 21 points to 14, which puts the totals at 334 and 323, respectively, with two races remaining in the season. In what is increasingly looking like a three-race victory lap for the recently crowned four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel,… Continue Reading »

Mercedes Stutters at Suzuka; Rosberg 8th in 2013 Japanese GP

In what would go down as one of the most disappointing races for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team this season, Lewis Hamilton had to retire after seven laps and Nico Rosberg settled for eighth place at the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix. Hamilton qualified for P3 on the starting grid, and actually got off to a good start off the five red lights, only to see all that work come undone after contact with Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull heading into turn 1. Contact with Vettel’s front wing led to a puncture in the right rear tire, and that was basically it for Hamilton as running for nearly an entire lap… Continue Reading »

Hamilton 5th, Rosberg 7th in 2013 Korean Grand Prix

It was another solid outing for the Mercedes F1 team. Solid, but most definitely not stellar. At the 2013 Korean Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton finished in fifth place, with teammate Nico Rosberg a couple of spots behind him in P7. The finish secures a bunch more important points for the team, yet it underscores the inability of the team to consistently get superb performance out of the car. At least, it hasn’t been enough to really grab some more wins. Tire wear has reared its ugly head, with Hamilton suffering from it on his right front one, right in his second stint after a stop. Rosberg, on the other hand, had… Continue Reading »

Lewis Hamilton Had to Win Belgium for Mercedes

We knew heading into the Belgian Grand Prix this past weekend that being able to score another win would be pivotal for the Mercedes team’s campaign. Newcomer Lewis Hamilton had just scored his first race win, and being able to win another one would definitely boost the team’s chances to get back in the hunt for the title. Alas, the team was not fated to win the first race after the summer break. Hamilton, starting from pole position, had to settle for third place, behind Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. Incidentally, Vettel sits atop the drivers’ standings with eight races to go, and Alonso is in second place. Sure, the… Continue Reading »

F1: Mercedes’ Hamilton Buoyed by First Win

It’s amazing what a race win can do for a driver’s confidence. Just take Lewis Hamilton, who only recently managed to win his first race as a member of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team. It took Hamilton 10 races to get that first win after leaving McLaren-Mercedes, finally getting the proverbial monkey off his back at the Hungaroring on July 28. Now, at the summer break and the midway point of the F1 season, Hamilton will be sacrificing his vacation time despite a well-earned rest. The Brit, who has managed four pole positions in the first ten races of 2013, is scheduled to continue training for the remaining nine races…. Continue Reading »
