qtr Mercedes To Launch GL Grand Edition Later This Year

Mercedes-Benz has announced the launch late this year of a Grand Edition for the GL. This model is to be the final iteration of the current model before it is replaced. To distinguish it from the other models, the Grand Edition is being released with a new front fascia and grille. LED daytime running lights as well as tinted headlights complete the front-end treatment. The rest of the body detail changes include aluminum running wheels, Grand Edition-specific 20-inch wheels and exclusive badging. The interior will feature luxurious two-tone leather seats, trim in black ash and stainless steel pedals.

Grand Edition buyers will have a choice of four engines, ranging from the 208 horsepower 350 BlueTEC and 262 horsepower 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY diesels to a 4.6-liter V8 having 335 horsepower, and the top-of-the-line 5.5 liter V8 with an output of 382 horsepower.

Tuning expert Piecha Design is at it again, releasing an all-new tuning kit that is applicable to both the Mercedes-Benz M-Class (w164) and GL-Class (x164).

Here’s an excerpt from the company’s official press release: “After the last PIECHA Design world premiers (SLK Performance RS & E-Class Cabriolet) were spectacular refinements of fresh air bolides, the Rottweil Mercedes-Benz specialists now took an off-road “field trip”: The brand-new Evorian RS-programme was specifically customised by PIECHA Design for the W164 M-Class and the technically closely related GL-class X164.”

The new tuning package includes a Power Converter Intermedia RS, H&R Coil Springs for a lowered ride (35mm in front, 50mm at the back) and an electronic lowering module for air suspension-equipped variants. Additionally, the kit comes with the tuner’s dp1-CC silver light rims, made with a three-piece build and has bases that ate made from stainless steel with a high-gloss polished finish. Around the rims are Continental tires for high performance.

Exterior features that come with the tuning kit include a quartet of side-sill LED lights, LED daytime running lights, aerowings made from high-gloss chrome, an RS rear diffuser, and a conversion for the exhaust system, which is now equipped with a four-tube Quadro system that has a couple of chrome-plated double tune end units screwed onto the vehicles serial mufflers.

Fuel filter leak recall issued on 2011 models

Heads up, folks! If you’re driving a 2011 E-Class, GL-Class, M-Class or R-Class, then you’d better call your dealer right away. Mercedes-Benz has just issued a recall on these models due to leakage problems on their fuel filters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there is an o-ring on the fuel system that may not have been lubricated and installed properly, thus causing fuel to spill out.

The recall bulletin from NHTSA provides specific details on diesel variants of these models, but our friends over at The Car Connection says otherwise, confirming that the problem affects gasoline variants as well. So be warned and be safe. Your dealer should replace the problematic fuel filter free of any charge whatsoever. It should be out publicly sometime before December. For your safety’s sake, call your dealer right now. You’ll never know when that bit of fuel catches fire from a cigarette stub.

We’ve all seen how fire chases a trail of leaked fuel. If you’re a fan of Bruce Willis in Die Hard, you should be able to recall how John McClane brought down, or blew up rather, a plane at mid takeoff. How did he do that? Well, he conveniently opened up the fuel door cap on the left wing and let out the fuel. He then jumped off the plane and set fire to the trail. This isn’t meant to scare you folks. It’s just a reminder of the hazards of fuel leaks.

Spy Cam: The 2012 GL-Class under guise

Some people find SUVs more exciting than passenger cars. Is it their sheer size or their calling for the off-road? Well, maybe it’s because they’re more practical when you’re carrying lots of cargo, including people. Whatever your reason may be, here’s something that might tickle your fancy—spy photos of the future GL-Class.

Yes, Mercedes-Benz is in the process of one-upping the current GL. Apparently, they don’t want to give first dibs to anyone about the details. But that won’t stop people like us from posting teasers. You are teased by spy photos, aren’t you?

The proto you see in the photos was captured in southern Germany, coming home to its development center after playing for some time outside the yard. There are hints that the next GL used a stretched ML platform as groundwork. So that just begs the question, “Will the new GL be using an ML engine?” Well, perhaps the 3 or 4-liter diesels, or maybe even the 5.5-liter gasoline engine. Who knows? It will probably also feature a 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic tranny.

We can’t really be certain about any of this. One thing though—the photos suggest that Merc designers are trying to put a more friendly face onto the GL. That means more width and more aerodynamic potential. Heck, it has LED daytime running lights as well.

Date of potential release? Probably in 2012.

Just stay tuned folks. There’s still a lot of questions hanging about the next GL.

Insider Spy: 2012 GL-Class gearing for a bold appearance

How much do you weigh? How much do your family members and friends weigh? These numbers should make you realize that a sedan or coupe just doesn’t quite cut it when you need to travel with them tagging along. What you need is something bigger—something that has the guts to pull your combined body weights and still look powerfully graceful. With that mind, we humbly present to you the latest in Mercedes-Benz’s luxury line of SUV’s—the 2012 GL-Class.

Set to have a heart similar to the ML-Class, the new GL-Class is very much still sitting in its conceptual stages. Power looks to be promising with Mercedes-Benz’s MOVE technology—cutting edge direct injection V6 and twin turbo V8 engines. Actual figures are still shrouded in mystery though, until Mercedes-Benz decides to make things public.

Style-wise, the new GL-Class is expected to retain some of its predecessor’s lines, although the extensive camouflaging up front and on the sides suggest major distinctions. The grille seems to have at least two to three bars, a lot less than the current GL, or perhaps the gaps have been widened for better airflow. Headlights look pretty much unique, and so do the taillights which have been repositioned on the tailgate area.

Other than, the new GL looks entirely promising. Bet your cards we’ll be here to update you as soon as Mercedes-Benz releases official information to the press.
