New Generation of Mercedes-Renault Smart Cars Caught on Tape

The third generation of smart cars have been caught on video during a recent testing. These are fruits of the partnership forged between Mercedes-Benz and Renault. The exterior of the smart cars remain literally sketchy as of the moment due to the camouflage wrapped all around their armors, so we can’t comment yet on what they look like on the outside. However, we were able to fish out some valuable information about the vehicles from MB Passion. According to the source, the cars will have a rear-wheel drive. Then, their engine, located at the rear, will be a 0.9-liter three cylinder model from Renault. The fortwo (C453) and the forfour… Continue Reading »

5 Smart Missed Opportunities

Smart has become a brand name synonymous with stylish compact city cars. An alliance was formed back in 1994 by watch manufacturer, Swatch, and Daimler-Benz AG to undertake the new project. Interest in the brand grew immediately following the first model’s release in 1998. Come launch, city commuters could buy a compact city car which wasn’t only attractive but incredibly practical around town. Drivers could even park perpendicularly in an otherwise parallel-parked street. The brand experienced some attempted expansion in its short history, which almost always failed. However, the future launch of the Renault Twingo-based Smart ForFour spells an opportunity to pick up where it left off with the former… Continue Reading »

Replacement fortwo Loses Its Renault Diesel

Back in late 2010, it was reported that Daimler and Renault-Nissan had signed an agreement to share drivetrains, with the agreement seeming to benefit the French-Japanese alliance more, as they would have had access to AMG’s engines. But other reports then came to light that Daimler’s smart division would be using Renaults miserly turbodiesel for the replacement fortwo. This is not to be, however, as a British magazine says that Renault has reportedly backed out of the deal. That the French car industry is in the doldrums is not news anymore, and so it’s not surprising to learn that the reason Renault is giving is a more restrictive R&D budget…. Continue Reading »

Video: SLR McLaren is a sitting duck

This is embarassing. Imagine scooting around town in your badass Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren only to end up being handed a parking violation ticket by an officer driving a Smart car. In case you’re wondering, a new SLR McLaren held a price tag of just over half a million dollars during its time. It seems the wealthy owner, self-titled “Prince of Germany”, was simply begging to get caught by displaying his ride in the wrong place at the wrong time. The officers just happened to be driving along Beverly Hills, California in their Smart Fortwo when, lo and behold, there sitting in a no-parking zone was the 617hp supercar dressed up… Continue Reading »
