Daimler Looking into Sale of Li-Tec Battery Joint Venture

Daimler AG together with partner Evonik Industries AG are considering selling Li-Tec Battery GmbH, a joint venture that isn’t really very profitable. The companies’ efforts to find another owner to join up have been in vain, which is why it is now considering a sale. Merc Leads Way in Researching Vehicle-to-Grid Communications Technology

Mercedes-Benz is currently spearheading research that will make vehicle-to-grid communication possible, so that the technology can be made standard on future electric vehicles. This will help reduce the burden that EVs place on the power grid, and owners will have lower electricity bills also since they’ll be charging during the cheapest periods. Here’s basically how the system works: When not in use, the EV is plugged into the grid. The user then informs the grid when the vehicle will be used next; this can be done via applications on smartphones and the iPad, for example. Since the grid now knows when the vehicle will be next used, it can determine… Continue Reading »

Daimler, 2 Others Eye Tesla Li Battery Technology

Daimler AG is one of three automobile manufacturers who are looking to the testing of Lithium batteries made by Tesla Motors in order to make powering electric cars more affordable. Currently, EVs make use of bigger batteries designed specifically for automotive use. Tesla’s battery, on the other hand, is based on laptop battery technology that is considered to be much cheaper. The battery in question, which is pictured above, is a pack composed of 6,831 cells [a common netbook has a 6-cell battery], manufactured by Tesla and used in the Roadster. The battery is good for around 245 miles out of every full charge. Analysts are pegging the laptop-based technology… Continue Reading »
