What is it about racing that inspires drivers to go all out on the track? Is it the hunger for victory? Or perhaps the fame and glory? Whatever it is, there’s got to be someone on the sidelines ready to pounce in just in case a driver goes too wild or something goes wrong mechanically.

For this year’s DTM racing series, that role is bestowed upon the 2011 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Safety Car. If you know your motorsports, it won’t be any surprise to you that despite all the hardwork and inspiration put into the base sedan by AMG, it’ll take a lot more to be able to oversee safety on the racing track. That’s why the safety car you see in the video has a lot more under its panels than the production version.

The 2011 safety car has been fitted with an adjustable coilover suspension system plus a high-performance braking system in order to allow it to breeze through the curves of any DTM racing event during the season. Again, if you’re a motorsports fan, you’ll know that each and every track requires different suspension settings in order to maximize traction at the highest possible speeds, hence the need for adjustable coilovers.

Oh yes, don’t forget the engine. AMG slapped a performance package onto the naturally-aspirated 6.3-liter V8 thus taking its performance rating to 480hp and 600Nm. It can accelerate up to 100 kph is just 4.3 seconds, so it shouldn’t have much trouble taking over the race as lead, err, safety car.

That’s it guys. Check out the video!

Bruno Spengler leads DTM team to one-two-three victory at Nurburgring

The DTM team of Mercedes-Benz swept the entire Nurburgring clean from lights to checkered flag, pushing aside their Audi opponents Mattias Ekstrom and Martin Tomczyk. It was Canadian Bruno Spengler who took home the top honor, garnering 10 points for his effort for the second time this season. Meanwhile, it was Britains Paul Di Resta and Gary Parfett who clinched 2nd and 3rd place to earn Mercedes-Benz a one-two-three podium victory pleasing around 86,000 DTM fans.

Spengler now leads the tournament comfortably by a span of 16 points. He says he focused right from the start to secure the lead, and was very, very happy that his teammates were able to keep up. Audi’s Ekstrom wasn’t able to give a good fight despite having started on a good pole position. He eventually fell behind to 7th place early in the start of the race. He admitted having started poorly as well, failing to downshift in the first turn. His wheels locked and he paid the price severely. His teammate Tomczyk, meanwhile, was only able to clinch 11th place.

David Coulthard, on the other hand, was able to maintain tenth position from lights to flag. His three teammates now lead the points standings and they are all getting set for the next race in Zandvoort, Netherlands, come August 20 to 24.

No matter how good you are at something, sometimes you have to say a little prayer of thanks to lady luck for being there when you need her most. And for 2010 DTM Mercedes-Benz driver Gary Paffett, lady luck’s presence earned him the first victory in the season, ahead of three fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers.

Earning the ire of fate was Audi’s Martin Tomczyk, whose quick pace was just as quickly decimated when his left-rear tire blew under pressure. Tomczyk had nowhere to go after leading the race until Lap 11.

Paffett, on the other hand, kept reaping the fruits of Audi’s mistakes. Fueling his unbelievable luck was Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom, whose dire mistake in the pits cost him a drive-through penalty.

Contending for 2nd place was Persson’s Jamie Green and Mercedes-Benz’s Bruno Spengler. The Canadian proved too determined for Green, who was pushed back into 3rd place in the 32nd lap.

4th placer Paul di Resta owes much to Paffett, whose tire management allowed him to catch up on the breakaway trio.

In the end, it was four 2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class race cars which finished ahead of everyone else, with 2005 DTM champion Paffett striking first blood for the season.

While movie stars can be forced into retirement when they run out of projects, retired F1 drivers have it better off. Having already proven their worth behind the wheel, it’s a lot easier for them to find teams willing to reemploy them.

One fine example is David Coulthard. Having won 13 Grand Prix races in a span of 15 years, he almost made it World Champion in 2001. Now working as F1 racing consultant for Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso, DC has been given an driver’s slot by Mercedes-Benz in the DTM German Touring Car series.

DC will riding with his wingman, rising Chinese racing star Franky Cheng, and three other drivers, driving a 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. News of DC’s return to racing came as early as December last year, but was only made official and announced publicly on Easter Day this year by Mercedes-Benz motorsport director Norbert Haug.

DC and Cheng are going to be joining the Mercedes-Benz ranks with Paul di Resta and Gary Parffett, both certified F1 test drivers for Force India and McLaren respectively, as well as Bruno Spengler of Canada and younger brother of the seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, Ralf.
