Tesla Working on All-Electric B-Class?

Last May, there were reports coming out that German automaker Mercedes-Benz had contacted premium electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors about possibly working on an all-electric Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Initial reports said it was an A-Class, but now it turns out that the vehicle in question is actually a B-Class. According to new reports, the all-electric B-Class should make its world debut sometime in 2014. The first idea was to use range extenders, but ultimately the engineers went with an all-electric drivetrain, of which Tesla should be in charge. There’s barely any specific information right now, but don’t worry because we’ll make sure that you’ll be updated once new details surface. Could… Continue Reading »

B-Class Hatch Gets Record ANCAP Safety Score

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class hatchback has just set the record for a crash test score for the Australasian New Car Assessment Program, or ANCAP for short. The test’s highest possible score is 37, and the B-Class garnered a near-perfect 36.78—quite a bit higher than the previous best of 36.59 scored by Toyota Aurion. Now, the B-Class joins the elite company of other ANCAP 5-star rating scorers: the Aurion, Ford Fiesta, Lexus CT200, Toyota Prius, and Volkswagen Polo. ANCAP, established in 1993, is the body responsible for giving out safety ratings for new vehicle models in terms of their front and side impact protection, ratings that cover Australia as well as New… Continue Reading »

Introducing the Mercedes-Benz GLA

Mercedes-Benz is developing a new crossover based on the A-Class platform, and word around cyberspace is that this new model will be named the GLA. Sources have pegged the GLA to be of the same size as the B-Class and should feature Mercedes-Benz’s MFA front-wheel drive platform. There are barely any details out right now, but many experts and sources are envisioning a range of four-cylinder petrols and turbodiesels that are of the same range found in today’s A-Class and B-Class models. This new compact crossover unit should provide Mercedes with an answer to such competitor models as the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1, and even the Range Rover… Continue Reading »

B-Class Plugin Hybrid Slated For The U.S. Market

Acknowledging the whims of the North American market, Mercedes is reportedly considering the development of a B-Class plug-in hybrid. This should not be a surprise since Mercedes has been saying all along that hybrids are a class of drivetrains that will be part of their offerings. As the smallest Mercedes available in the U.S. market, the B-Class will be another component of their war against their German rivals. But as other variants of the B-Class have shown, this small Mercedes is by no means an entry-level vehicle. Interior appointments and safety features are at par with those of the C- and even E-Class. With the introduction of a plug-in hybrid,… Continue Reading »

B-Class AMG Shows Variant-Specific Details

Already hinted at and widely expecteed, the B-Class AMG has finally been seen in the wild.  As befits, and typical of, an AMG high performance variant, the B-Class AMG features a revised snout with bigger intakes plus a rear fascia with twin exhausts. Being an AMG model, these exterior revisions are definitely not for display only as the rumor is that this hot B-Class will be powered by a 2-liter turbocharged four with an output between 320 and 360 horsepower. As with most other high performance models in the market today, a dual-clutch transmission will transfer power to the driven wheels. All-wheel drive is a very real possibility. We can… Continue Reading »

B-Class E-Cell Becomes A Practical Daily Driver

Expectedly, German automakers like Mercedes will use the Frankfurt Auto Show to present and announce their upcoming products and technologies that are in the pipeline. One of these is a B-Class vehicle that’s been converted into an E-Cell, which is Mercedes-speak for an EV. But this B-Class E-Cell is unique in that it’s been fitted with a range-extending internal combustion engine that will allow the vehicle to recharge its batteries when they run out. Prime motivation for this electric B-Class is a 100 kilowatt electric motor getting its juice from a lithium ion array. With this arrangement, range is limited to 100 kilometers but by using the 1000cc turbo engine,… Continue Reading »
