After opting out to feature an advertisement in last year’s Super Bowl, Mercedes-Benz comes back this year in the grandest event in American football. The ad this time is called “The Big Race”. The theme of the ad is about the all-time favorite children’s tale of the race between the tortoise and the hare. According to Business Insider, the German automaker revealed that it is putting a “modern twist” to the popular Aesop’s Fables story. Seeing is believing, so they say. And what better way to demonstrate the safety of Mercedes-Benz cars than to show a seemingly wrecked CLS that protected its occupants, including the family dog. Mercedes’ spot is called “Amy”, which is the name of the dog accompanying its owners when they crashed in their CLS last year. The voice over asks if Amy was lucky to walk away from the crash. A nice video made in cooperation with Jung von Matt, the leading ad agency of Daimler, shows the Actros as a taxi to show its harshest critics what are its benefits. It passed by Volvo and MAN and picked up passengers from their offices. The result was impressive, not surprisingly, because the “employees” of the competitors seem to like what they saw inside the Mercedes truck. People at the Munich airport were also fascinated by the “taxi truck”, who wouldn’t be?
Wayne Rooney, one Manchester United’s top strikers, has signed a two year advertising deal with Mercedes-Benz recently, and has received a brand new custom Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG worth $225,000 as a signing bonus (should have asked for the CL65). While marketing execs have started to question the deal, Mercedes is moving ahead with making Rooney their spokesperson. Critics claim that Mercedes should have chosen someone aspirational and classy, and avoid Rooney with his somewhat wicked reputation.
